Pego will recover the centenary clock stored in its bell tower

February 13 from 2024 - 13: 28

The Pego City Council wants to recover a piece of the municipality's history. It is an old clock from the bell tower of the church of the Assumption of Our Lady that has been disused for years and dismantled into different pieces in the same tower of the ecclesiastical temple.

As indicated by the Municipal Archive, this historical piece could be the clock that the Pego City Council acquired in 1866 to provide the hour service in the municipality. The council bought this piece from Vicent Garcia, a watchmaker from Alcoi. Apparently, at first the clock did not work, but after some renovations carried out in 1867 it was made to work. This machinery has been dismantled inside the tower for years.

The restoration work will be carried out by a specialized company from Massanassa (València). The parts of the mechanical clock will be disassembled and it will be taken down from the bell tower to be transferred to its restoration workshop. Once there, all parts will be cleaned and degreased.

It is planned that all parts of the clock will also be polished "with brass spikes that do not damage it," they indicate. Subsequently, bench paint will be applied to all pieces. Once this work is completed, the clock will be moved back to the bell tower where it will be mounted and placed in a methacrylate urn, which will be purpose-built for its protection.

The budget for this entire restoration process amounts to 3.146 euros, an amount that will be fully financed by the Pegolino town council. "Both because of its age and its heritage value, we must recover this clock," says the Councilor for Historical Heritage, Laura Castellà, who also points out that the possibilities of being able to display said machinery are being studied so that all residents, as well as "As visitors, you can learn about this piece of the history of our town."
