The Benissa City Council has now proposed to recover the defensive tower from the medieval era of Tros de les Calcides. The restoration of the building will cost 500.000 euros, of which 90% will be paid for with a grant from the Department of Heritage of the Diputación de Alicante.
The remainder, 50.000 euros, must be assumed by the consistory itself. An investment that will serve, as the mayor Arturo Poquet has said, to "revalue a treasure from the XNUMXth century". To which he added that "recovering heritage is a show of respect for the history of Benissa and the legacy of our ancestors."
This fortification is the result of the addition and accumulation of different architectural structures that obey different historical moments characterized, in turn, by different forms of economic specialization in the exploitation of livestock and agricultural resources in the coastal area of Benissa.
Two well differentiated stages stand out in the construction. The first of the original architectural structures prior to the XNUMXth century and the later defensive tower from the second half of the same century. The second stage is characterized by extensions that took place in the mid-XNUMXth century due to its transformation into housing and a center for agricultural exploitation.
The building has been the object of consolidation and restoration by the council through a Workshop School between 2009 and 2011. The intervention proposed now, aims to maintain the dimensions, so the visual impact of the Tower House is not altered. of the Tros de les Chalcides. Specifically, the completion of the roof and closing of facades, the paving of the different dependencies, the installation of plumbing, drainage and electricity, fitting out of toilets, adaptation of the accesses, the plot and the perimeter fencing are planned.
Poquet thanked the presence of the Provincial Deputy for Architecture, José Ramón González, declaring that "this action would not be possible without the financial and technical support and the Alicante Provincial Council".
