The Pedreguer municipal music school and conservatory has organized the “La Dona Compositora” concert for the second consecutive year to highlight the work of female authors and composers in the world of music. The concert will be on Wednesday, March 8 at 18:30 p.m. at La Pista and is open to all citizens.

The school's teachers, led by Merche Femenia, began last year to investigate and publicize women composers throughout history, convinced that music has also been created by women and that it is important to recognize their contribution .

In the previous edition, composers from all over the world were presented, such as Gisèle Sikora (Belgium, 1952-2006), Hildegarda Von Bingen (Germany, 1098-1179), Carmen Farré de Prat (Barcelona, 1900-1985), Amy Beach (USA 1867-1944), Fanny Mendelssonh (Germany, 1805-1847), Cécile Chaminade (France, 1857-1847), and music by current composers such as Lena Orsa (Russia), Begoña González Gómez (Bilbao) and Merche Femenia were also performed.

Thanks to this investigation, curious facts were discovered, such as that Chiquinha Gonzaga (Brazil, 1847-1935) composed the first Carnival march in 1899 and was the first woman to conduct an orchestra in Brazil. Or that Consuelo Velázquez (Mexico, 1916-2005) was the author of the famous bolero Besame Mucho.

The success of last year's call, with around a hundred attendees, and the conviction of the management of the music school in favor of equality between men and women, have led the teaching staff of the center to continue with the research this year .

The audition will have the participation of about 100 students from the conservatory, who will once again interpret works composed by women of all styles and periods.
