Three years of Glory, the storm that left the Marina Alta unrecognizable

January 20 from 2023 - 08: 03

A weekend of warnings and predictions warned of what was to come on Monday, January 20, 2020. Stormy Gloria was expected to be scandalous, but reality exceeded all expectations.

The State Meteorological Agency activated the red alert level in the region, the highest due to the risk it posed. And it was no wonder. The strong gusts of wind, whose records reached 130 km/h in municipalities such as Dénia, they destroyed and collapsed walls, signs, trees and roofs.

But Gloria not only stood out for the wind. The coastal storm was added to the accumulated rain. The regional coastline was the most affected, since the storm left records with waves of more than 8 meters high in some points such as Xàbia.

Another major affected was the Moraig cove in Poble Nou de Benitatxell. The storm destroyed part of the access road due to the waves that did not stop hitting for hours.

But it also posed a strong threat to the interior. The Gorgos river as it passes through Gata de Gorgos and Xaló caused concern to such an extent that it overflowed in the Xaloner area.

The Gloria storm left numerous material damages in the region that, to this day, are still visible. As in the Deveses beach, which could not be recovered and, since then, the sea continues to touch the walls and terraces of the nearest houses.
