The places and monuments that remain from the Civil War and the Dictatorship in the Marina Alta

November 20 from 2022 - 08: 29

This week, the Ministry of Participation, Transparency, Cooperation and Democratic Quality has published an update of the Catalog of Vestiges of the Civil War and the Dictatorship of the Valencian territory. The list also includes a list of elements contrary to democratic memory and the dignity of the victims that must be withdrawn or eliminated soon.

This catalog has been renewed to include those vestiges that have been communicated to the Department of Democratic Quality and those that have been withdrawn to date. The new ones or those that still exist must be eliminated and, both the city councils and the neighboring communities must complete their removal to comply with current regulations.

The Department of Democratic Quality has sent a letter to all the municipalities that own the vestiges that appear in the catalog and that have not been removed. They have been made aware, in all cases, that if they do not remove the vestiges contrary to the democratic memory voluntarily, within a month, the procedure for the withdrawal will be initiated ex officio of said elements, in accordance with the provisions of Law 14/2017 on Democratic Memory and for the coexistence of the Valencian Community.

In the last update of the list have been included a total of 82 communications with the location of 52 new vestiges about which there was no information. In addition, the removal of vestiges initially included in the catalog published in 2021 has been verified. So that, for the moment, a total of 43 vestiges have been withdrawn, suppressed, eliminated or revoked, including symbols, plaques, names of streets or public spaces, honors and others. Of these, 14 were in different municipalities of Castelló, 8 in the province of Alicante and 21 in that of Valencia.

Vestiges of the dictatorship in the region

The municipalities of the Marina Alta have a place in the catalogue, both for hosting locations with vestiges already removed and for pointing out places where they remain exposed. Of all the peoples, only one has places and monuments of these characteristics openly declared by the City Council, which must get rid of them.

The only signs pending removal

We are talking about Benissa. The most striking vestige is located in the rural area of Pinos, specifically in the hermitage square. In the middle of this location you can still visit a locally owned cross, which was implanted in this place as a symbol of the Civil War and subsequent Franco dictatorship, and which has the inscription "Year of Victory 1939".

In addition, the list focuses on five Benisseras streets where there are some plaques of the phalanx in Officially Protected Housing (VPO) of the Ministry of Housing that house the yoke and arrows as a symbol. All privately owned, they are installed, according to the catalog, in the streets Virgen de los Dolores 1, Padre Antonio 1, Miguel Hernández 10, Benidoleig 1 and Fray Humilde Soria 1.

For its part, the City Council Dénia reports the removal of a privately owned commemorative plaque from the "Ramón de Cárdenas" housing union group. Also, Ondara has affirmed the suppression in various streets of the municipality of a total of 23 VPO plates privately owned by the National Housing Institute, like those that Benissa still owns. And finally, the Xàbia It also confirms the withdrawal of the granting of honors by the dictatorship with regard to the name of the autonomously owned Vicente Tena Public School.

On the other hand, the municipalities of Beniarbeig, Benigembla, Benimeli, Murla, Parcent, Els Poblets, Ràfol d'Almúnia, Tormos, La Vall de Gallinera and Vall d'Ebo they communicate that they have no vestige between its municipal terms.

But, there are other locations that the catalog indicates because the Consistory on duty He hasn't communicated anything about it yet.. These are the administrations of Alcalalí, l'Atzúbia, Benidoleig, Calp, Castell de Castells, Gata de Gorgos, Llíber, Orba, Pedreguer, Pego, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, Sagra, Sanet i Negrals, Senija, Teulada Moraira, la Vall d'Alcalà, Vall de Laguar, El Verger and Xaló.

It is possible to consult the complete list here.

Comments
  1. Julian Dominguez says:

Having read the comments, it is clear that without Don Francisco Franco, there would be little in Jávea!

  2. Cesar Pino Dominguez says:

Good morning. It is a pity that some people of a certain age who have known the aftermath of the civil war and the mess that is now hidden behind the word democracy have not matured.
Why do you have to obey some absurd laws imposed by the wrong ones? They don't dedicate their effort and budgets to productive things and not to expenses and riots, instead of building and building for our improvement in general, Under the false name of progressivism, they cultivate the regression and destruction of everything that it cost our generation to reach a position of privilege and world consideration by oscillating between ninth and eleventh place in the world industrial ranking.
Politicians and parties apart. I'm talking about people who hold positions that should be considered respectable and honorable.
They are believed to be forts and macho because they tear down crosses and because they tear up some plates from buildings that were built in the postwar period. What has not been matched in the abusively called democracy. They have already emptied many swamps because they were what they call Francoists; A swamp stores water, not ideology and provides electricity and consumption, those houses housed needy families, hundreds of hospitals and places of assistance, universities, etc. were built. not to bore
Tear off the plates, but don't tear down the houses because they may be needed again. Respect HISTORY INTEGRALLY, and you will learn to live with your neighbors and not to snub them by name of your committee:
Ministry of Participation, Transparency, Cooperation and Democratic Quality, who want to graduate.
This will NOT justify waste of time and money.
Without the intention of bothering, but of collaborating in that the absurd and obsolete, consequences and unreasonable; because everywhere "they cooked and boil broad beans." I advocate for new practices of concord; that this will open the possibility of improvement and progress of our Nation.

  3. FERNANDO MARI VENTURA says:

I have lived in Franco's times, and I am in a democracy, I hope not to return to dictatorships, but I also hope that democracy is healthy, each of us has had an experience in life, let's get the best out of that experience, it is the way to improve in life and show that we are intelligent, thank you.

  4. Marcos Ortiz says:

All a waste of time and not dedicating yourself to what is really necessary... what's more, many families would not have had the opportunity to have a home, if it weren't for the Ministry of Housing... I have seen a lot of slums (in the 60s and 70s) in France , Italy and Portugal, for lacking a similar Institution... Not everything was bad... Historical revisionism is dangerous, the transition was exemplary...

  5. Manuel Andres says:

I believe that we must all adhere (whether we like it or not) to the Law, in this case to the current Law 14/2017 of Democratic Memory and for the coexistence of the Valencian Community, and abide by it. Without forgetting that the laws can be modified through the corresponding democratic and constitutional mechanisms.

  6. barts people says:

The transition was a historic feat where a reconciliation between the Spanish took place, an example for humanity. There are political leaders who want to blow it up to, without a doubt, get electoral revenue. The vast majority of society cares nothing if in such a VPO building there is a Franco plaque or a shield on a wall.

  7. emilio echpare says:

Adolfo Suárez, Revilla el de Cantabria, Radio Nacional…

  8. Miquel says:

In Jávea it will be necessary to demolish the Church of the port, the Parador since Franco's minister did it in the dictatorship if we go like this the only thing they want in a single word is revenge for losing.

    • barts people says:

In Jávea, we would have been satisfied with the fact that the government of Mariano Rajoy had not renewed the concession for the occupation of maritime-terrestrial space of the house of the Francoist minister at the tip of the arenal for 70 more years.

      • Miquel says:

Totally agree that it was illegal, but on a whim of revenge that does not seem right to me.
Neither Franco's dictatorship nor Republican fascist dictatorship.
What a pity that the same people who are bombing Ukraine are the same ones who helped the Republicans in Spain.

    • Miquel says:

And the Tosalet urbanization built by the dictatorship would also have to collapse.
Apart from the symbols, the crosses and the names also the big buildings would have to be removed.

    • savior says:

not to lose, they were runners-up
