Calp will keep posidonia on its beaches this summer

06 July 2022 - 15: 12

The Calp City Council will maintain the remains of the posidonia meadow on its beaches this summer due to the entry into force of decree 64/2020 of the Consell for the conservation of this endemic species of the Mediterranean Sea, of great ecological value.

Until now, the town hall removed the remains of posidonia oceanica during the summer season as this usually causes inconvenience to tourists. However, the new regional regulation prevents its removal in order to preserve the important role that this plant plays at an environmental level, although it allows its transfer within the same beach.

In this way, they maintain the posidonia remains in Cantal Roig and Puerto Blanco, while the City Council has moved these remains to one side of the beach in Cala Calalga. In the Morelló cove they have accumulated at the western end of the beach – in the Borumbot area.

In the case of La Fossa, as the regional decree provides for this possibility, the City Council will request authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition to remove these remains because "it is a beach with a reduced size in which there is a large tourist influx as well as a large number of tourist services," according to municipal sources.

All this means that it does not have enough space to house the stockpiles of these marine plants. It will also request permission to do the same in Arenal-Bol but only for specific reasons derived from the state of the sea and whenever possible, the remains will be collected at the ends of the beach. The City Council intends to transfer these remains to a municipal property plot during the summer season between June 15 and September 30 and would return them to the beach after said period.

Calp will raise awareness about the importance of posidonia

On the other hand, the City Council has highlighted the need to make bathers aware of the oceanic meadow since they tend to consider it as dirt. The truth is that the presence of remains of this species both in the water and in the sand are a clear sign of the good quality of the water and indicate that it is clean and free of contamination. In addition, he explains that these accumulations of leaves that occur on the beach are remains that have detached from the seagrass meadow as a result of storms and that they receive the name of arribazones, which play a fundamental role since they prevent the loss of sand. of the beaches.

On the other hand, the Posidonia meadow is a source of rich marine biodiversity due to the great diversity of species it houses and at the same time it is a vulnerable species, hence the need to protect it.
