Brisa, the new osprey of Marjal Pego-Oliva, arrives after the loss of Estell

11 October 2022 - 12: 45

The new tenant of Marjal Pego-Oliva is called Brisa, she arrived on September 22, she comes from the Balearic Islands and is between 250 and 280 days old. But, the future "queen of the sky" has arrived at the natural park to continue with the reintroduction of this type of bird of prey as a replacement for the previous specimen, Estell, whose whereabouts have been unknown for months.

Brisa's has not been an easy life. She was born in the Balearics where she was rejected by her mother. This caused problems when it came to feeding, a process that is so important in the early stages of any animal's life. Despite this, she Brisa took flight, but unfortunately her poor physical condition forced her to give up, falling into the Mediterranean water, where she was found with hardly any strength to survive. Luckily her rescuers saved her life.

From this moment Brisa has gone through a recovery process, among other places to a specialized center in Santa Faz. With better conditions, it was decided to send her to the Marjal de Pego, "because it is a location with perfect conditions to be able to finish her recovery and also live," explained yesterday Itziar Colodro, a member of the Migres Foundation, one of the legs of this project to recover the osprey in the Marjal Pegolina, jointly with the Wildlife Service of the Department of the Environment, the Iberdrola Foundation and the Oliva i Pego town councils.

Already in the pegolino area, Brisa will have to undergo a few days of rehabilitation, "a feather graft has been made on its tail, which suffered injuries when it fell into the Mediterranean," said Colodro, who believes that in a week the bird will be able to start to fly.

Yesterday the technicians in charge of the project placed a GPS on Brisa, "to know where it is at all times and detect possible threats, it was already done with the previous tenants," Colodro clarified.

Likewise, Brisa is expected to be the spearhead to continue with the project, because more copies are expected to arrive, although there are no defined dates yet. "We are very proud of this project, we want the osprey to fly in our skies as it did in the past, we believe it is very important to commit to this type of initiative, which is so important for the fauna and flora of our natural park," he commented. the mayor of Pego, Enrique Moll.
