Acció Ecologista-Agró supports the demonstration against Llíber's PAI and describes the project as "territorial destruction"

February 16 from 2024 - 13: 06

The environmental entity adheres to the manifesto of the Save the Vall Platform, along with dozens of organizations, to demand the total and definitive cessation of the project. The Platform has organized a demonstration next Sunday, February 18, to show its rejection of the PAI "Medina" to be developed in the town of Llíber, located on the pre-coastal of the Marina Alta region.

This is a call that has received the support of dozens of organizations in defense of the environment, cultural and social. The entity describes the fact as "territorial destruction, which would result from the construction of almost 500 homes in an area of high ecological value", such as Muntanya Llarga.

«We find ourselves again with an outdated EPI, initially approved in 2001, which does not respond to the real needs of a territory with a strong identity such as the Valley of Pop. In this sense, instead of addressing the urgent need to preserve non-urbanized territories to face the loss of natural landscapes and biodiversity, the pressing climate change and its notable consequences, another urban development is promoted, of a predatory nature and with speculative, which with the construction of 488 single-family villas and their respective swimming pools, on a total area of 406.213 m², will only worsen droughts, heat waves, floods, fires and many other socio-environmental problems," said Acció Ecologista. Aggro.

They denounce that the PAI "Medina" of Llíber, which will double the population of the Alicante municipality in a very short period of time, will trigger a series of environmental effects that motivate the opposition and justify the social demands that point to the total and definitive cessation of the project.

«There are other negative externalities linked to a drastic reduction in the quantity and quality of water. As well as greater difficulties in sanitation processes. All in an area that suffers significant water stress and where there are restrictions on the use of drinking water, without requiring an exhaustive, duly updated report from the basin organization, which justifies the sufficiency and availability of these resources," adds the organization.

They express that "the saturation of the territory will not only squeeze the water, but will project major deficiencies in road infrastructure and health and social services." Regarding mobility, it is worth highlighting the "lack of sustainability that characterizes this urban development, since the residents of the new homes will depend entirely on the use of a private vehicle for their travel, taking into account that there is no public transportation nor is there foreseen. area. "With the increase in polluting greenhouse gas emissions and the damage to health that this would entail."

Regarding health and social services, they denounce that the increase in population would cause "greater deficiencies" in terms of health care and the collection of urban solid waste.

For these reasons, Acció Ecologista-Agró supports the Save the Vall Platform, by signing its manifesto and attending the demonstration called for next Sunday at 11:00. Furthermore, from the environmental group they call for mass mobilization to "put an end together to the resurgence of plans and projects from the last century, which, like that of Medina de Llíber, reduce the resilience capacity of our territories in the face of the climate emergency and that are contrary to the environmental commitments adopted on an international scale.
