The Councilor for Municipal Services of Pedreguer, Pepe Cabrera Puigcerver, traveled to the island of Sardinia between March 28 and 30 to learn about the operation of the door-to-door waste collection system that is carried out in Sardinian municipalities from Cagliari and Oristano. The objective of the study visit was to find out the keys to the success of this collection system for its possible application in the municipality of Pedreguer.

This trip has been organized by the Valencian Association of Municipalities for Door-to-Door Collection and was attended by mayors and councilors from 25 towns in the Valencian Community.

The island of Sardinia has become the second region in Italy in terms of the amount of municipal waste collected separately compared to the total amount of waste produced, currently reaching 74,22%. As for the Sardinian municipalities, 366 of the 377 municipalities on the island, comprising 91% of the inhabitants, exceed the legal target of 65%, and 144 municipalities exceed 80%.

In this section, it should be noted that all the municipalities on the island of Sardinia with more than 30.000 inhabitants have adopted the door-to-door system throughout their territory, except for Sassari, the only Sardinian municipality with more than 30.000 inhabitants that has not yet adopted the system door to door throughout its territory and does not reach 60% recycling.

Cagliari is the most populous city in Sardinia, with more than 150.000 inhabitants and 78.000 homes. It presents different door-to-door collection models for all household waste. Likewise, it has various solutions for emergencies: the eco-centre, the ecological mobile islands and the automatic ecological mini-islands.

The city of Oristano is the capital of the homonymous province. It is 90 km from Cagliari and has a population of 30.000. It was one of the first towns in Italy to implement the door-to-door system and it has an eco-center where various objects such as small household appliances, bicycles, furniture, etc. are recovered, which are provided to people with limited resources.

In both Cagliari and Oristano, the Valencian delegation was received by the mayor of each city, as well as councilors and technical personnel who explained how their service works and answered the various questions raised by the attendees.
