May 02 from 2022 - 10: 47

On January 27, 1998, the City Council of Pedreguer signed the twinning with the Consistory of the Daira de Amgala, Daira that is also part of the Wilaya del Aaiun where it is estimated that there are more than 50.500 refugees. An estimated 8.000 people are refugees in Amgala, the majority of whom are women and children under 12 years of age.

At the beginning of 2022, the City Council again contacted the NGO Ayuda en los Pueblos, located in Quart de Poblet, to see how to launch a new international cooperation project for the development of the Saharan lands with the counterpart called La Media Saharawi Red Moon. Since Vila de Pedreguer has had a special relationship with Amgala since the last century, it has been decided that this location would be the area of action where the project will be developed again.

The project will be financed 100% by the City Council of Pedreguer with a total amount of €4.000 and its objectives are focused on improving the nutrition of the most vulnerable families and improving and cleaning up part of the running water system of the refugee population. It could be said that it is a type of second phase or continuation of the cooperation project that was already carried out, in the same area, in 2021. It should also be remembered that in 2018-2019 the city council financed an ambulance for the “Martir Charif center » which welcomes mine victims.

A means of transport that facilitated the medical check-ups of these vulnerable people, who were mutilated by the mines that creep along the wall of shame and that have been planted by the Kingdom of Morocco and its king.

The direct beneficiary population of the nutritional improvement will be 75 families at risk of exclusion and with a high vulnerability index as a result of so many years of refuge, pregnant women, widows, with many children, population with functional diversity and mobility problems, sick of hospitals or staff
patient assistant. In addition, the indirect beneficiary population of this part of the project will be the families of the local commerce stores, which are the places where the food baskets will be purchased.

On the other hand, in the same way as the nutritional project, the improvement of the water system will be for families with a high vulnerability index and that is between 80% and 100%. Families that still have zinc deposits and are consuming contaminated water. The idea is that little by little, the Daira de Amgala and the Wilaya del Aaiun, have a sanitation of the water system, while the freedom of the Saharawi People arrives, which is always in the mind.

A total of 20 vulnerable families will see and drink water in good condition with the installations and advice on cleaning and curing the tanks. In this section, as indirect beneficiaries, we find the stores of the local market of Aaiun, which will be the places to supply these deposits.

The Solidarity Councilor of the Pedreguer City Council, Ferran Lloret Morell, has stated that "everything and the betrayal of the Spanish state government against the Saharawi people, the Pedreguer government will continue working to improve the life of the population of Western Sahara, and in of their twinning, and supporting the self-determination referendum as dictated by international resolutions"
