The Ministry of Education, through the General Directorate of Educational Innovation and Inclusion and in collaboration with the Valencian Diabetes Association (AVD), has prepared the Guide for the educational support of students with diabetes. This document, aimed at educational centers, has the main objective of guaranteeing attention to the needs of students diagnosed with diabetes.
This guide provides recommendations on educational responses that teachers can offer to students for self-control of the disease. The main purpose of this document is to improve the lives of students with diabetes at the center without their health condition being a barrier.
The document establishes the three main barriers that students with this pathology face: access, participation and learning. In each of them, measures are proposed at the center, classroom and personalized level.
Regarding access, aspects of food, space in the classroom and control devices are addressed. Participation addresses issues of communication, activities and emotional well-being. And in terms of learning, knowledge about this pathology, tutorial action and personalized actions are addressed.
Among the recommendations made are having a space in the classroom to store control devices, allowing the use of the sink on demand, ensuring that students with diabetes have quick access to water and eating in the first dining room shift. , among other.
This guide is for use in the educational environment and, as such, should be considered a guidance document that complements the medical, pharmacological and nutritional guidelines of medical specialists.
