They judge a former popular mayor of Calp, Javier Morató, and two of his former councilors, Fernando Penella and Juan Roselló, two of his relatives, a municipal official and two businessmen for an alleged corruption scheme related to the waste collection and treatment service of that locality.
The case constitutes a separate piece of the so-called 'Brugal case'. The Calp City Council awarded the contract for this service to the mercantile Colsur SL in February 1988. The Prosecutor's Office maintains that the politicians agreed with the contractor to pay commissions in exchange for this award, which became effective during the following years.
Specifically, always according to the brief of provisional conclusions of the public prosecution, the then mayor and the two deputy mayors distributed 100 million of the old pesetas (600.000 euros), while another 20 million pesetas (120.000 euros) were allocated to the local soccer club and 4 million (24.000 euros) to a
intermediary.
The businessman allegedly fraudulently increased the number of tons of garbage processed to meet these payments with the knowledge of the public officials. The Prosecutor's Office figures at 11.983.904 euros the amount that the successful bidder tried to defraud the municipal coffers and at 4.285.998 the actual damage caused.
The Public Ministry initially requests penalties ranging from two to 14 years in prison for those accused of continuing crimes of bribery, prevarication, embezzlement and money laundering.
