15 September 2023 - 15: 38

At the end of August, the usual drop in employment this month is confirmed, although aggravated by the sharp drop in hiring where permanent contracts are reduced by more than 47% compared to July. Therefore, the positive streak of job creation ends, it comes to a standstill in 6 consecutive months of job creation with the loss of 1.143 jobs.

Unemployment, however, decreased slightly in the month of August by just over half a percentage point, unlike the national territory, the Valencian Community and the province of Alicante, which saw an increase in the number of claimants at +0,93%, +0,98, 0,78% and +10% respectively. This slight decrease, however, is the most positive variation in job seekers in the month of August in the last 2008 years (flat variation or slight increases compared to July) and manages to reach a record number of registered unemployment, the lowest figure of any month since August 7.563 (XNUMX people).

The economy of the Marina Alta usually destroys jobs in August due to the end of the tourist season and this year has not been an exception, despite the extraordinary performance of the labor market in the first half of the year. Although job creation since last January has been so high (6.106 more workers in the first eight months of the year) that, despite the drop in employment in August, the total number of affiliates remained at 64.222 people, the level highest in said month of the historical series. On this occasion, the monthly variations of both variables (job seekers and Social Security affiliations) have shown the expected sign, and improve the 2022 records.

Thus, the number of people affiliated with Social Security 1, in this month of August, 1.143 jobs have been reduced compared to July (+3,13% compared to August '22), leaving behind six consecutive months with a positive balance.

As for the number of job seekers, it decreased in August by just 48 people compared to July, reaching 8.383 job seekers, a figure that reduces the level of unemployment to its lowest rate since August 2008. This is equivalent to a monthly decrease in the 0,57%, chaining seven consecutive months of decline. Furthermore, this last percentage variation improves that of any August since 2014 (-0,72%). Interannual, it means that in the region we have 699 fewer claimants (-7,70%), than a year ago (August '22).

By calculating the unemployment rate, in the Marina Alta, an increase of 0,12 points is observed, reaching an estimated unemployment rate of 11,55%. The province of Alicante and Comunitat Valenciana also see their rates increased
of unemployment, staying at 15,58% and 13,88%, respectively.

In terms of hiring, there is a sharp drop compared to the previous month. During the month of August, 2.634 contracts have been formalized, 2.268 contracts less than in July, or in other words, a drop of 46,27%. The lowest figure for the month of August since 2015 (2.600 contracts). Significant data if we compare it with the national records, Comunitat Valenciana and province of Alicante, where hiring, on the contrary, falls compared to July by -23,93%, -31,99% and -29,59%, respectively. which are smaller decreases than what is reflected in the region. In year-on-year terms, hiring has fallen by 26,07% compared to August'22.
