This is how the international residents of Teulada Moraira should vote in the 2023 elections

The Teulada City Council has presented a guide of steps to follow to exercise the right to vote for the next elections of 2023. Together with the Provincial Council of Alicante, the Consistory directs the indications especially to international citizens residing in the location.

In order to vote in the municipal elections on May 28, 2023, it is essential for everyone to be registered in the municipality, as well as request the will to vote, provide the identity document of the country of origin.

Who will be able to vote? Spaniards, citizens of the European Union and citizens of countries with an agreement: United Kingdom, Norway, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Colombia, Korea, Chile, Ecuador, Iceland, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand.

What requirements must be met to be able to vote?

  • Be of legal age (18 years) on the day of the vote.
  • Not be in an irregular situation.
  • Not be deprived of the right to active suffrage.
  • Be a resident in Spain and be registered in the town hall of your home.
  • Have expressed the intention to vote and be registered in the Electoral Census prior to its closure.

The registration deadlines vary depending on whether they are residents of the European Union or countries with an agreement:

  • For citizens of the European Union, the term will end on January 30, 2023.
  • For citizens of countries with an agreement, they can be carried out from December 1, 2022 to January 15, 2023.

Residents of the European Union

  • If I have expressed my desire to vote in previous electoral processes and I am still registered in the same municipality, I DO NOT need to carry out any procedure, since I am still registered in the Electoral Census.
  • To check whether or not I am registered in the Electoral Census, I can go to the SIT.
  • If I am registered but I have not expressed my desire to vote before, I will have to make a formal declaration of expression of desire to exercise the right to vote. I have two options:
  • If I have a digital signature, I can enter the website of the National Statistics Institute (INE) and follow the steps in the 'Procedures' section: https://sede.ine.gob.es/
  • If I do not have a digital signature or I need help with this procedure, I can go to the Teulada Town Hall SIT or the Espai La Senieta de Moraira SIT; during business hours until 30/01/2023.
  • If I am a resident in Spain, but I am not yet registered, I will have to go to the town hall to register and make the declaration of willingness to vote, following the same steps mentioned above.

Residents of countries with agreement

  • If I come from a country with an agreement (United Kingdom, Norway, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Colombia, Korea, Chile, Ecuador, Iceland, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago or New Zealand) I must register on the electoral roll every time I want to vote .
  • In order to exercise the Right to vote, in addition to the general requirements, I will have to provide the DNI/passport and the residence permit in Spain that meets the time required in the corresponding agreement.

The times required are:

  • 3 years at the time of application for UK citizens.
  • 3 years on voting day for citizens of Norway.
  • 5 years at the time of application for Bolivia, Cape Verde, Colombia, Korea, Chile, Ecuador, Iceland, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand.

Extra requirements for residents from the United Kingdom:

  • That they are in possession of the corresponding residence authorization in Spain.
  • That they have a residence permit in Spain for at least 3 years prior to their application for registration in the electoral roll.
  • That they are registered in the municipal register of the municipality of their habitual residence.
  • That they are registered in the Electoral Census of Foreign Residents in Spain, according to the procedure explained in the previous section.

Citizen service

The Teulada City Council makes the personalized attention service available to all citizens for consultation and registration in the Electoral Census through the SIT, from 9:00 a.m. to 14:00 p.m., until 30/01/2023 for residents coming from the European Union. From December 1, 2022 to January 15, 2023 for residents from countries with an agreement.

In addition, an additional service will be offered from December 1 to 7, 2022 and from January 9 to 13, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. There will be a person dedicated exclusively to helping citizens who need to carry out this procedure.
