Ondara hosts for the first time the regional championship of 'Frontó amb Frares' after renovating the Municipal Frontón

17 June 2021 - 09: 18

The Ondara City Council, through the Sports Councils (directed by Mar Chesa) and Municipal Building Maintenance (directed by Miguel Gomis), has improved the municipal fronton facilities (widely used by the members of the Municipal School of Pilota and by fans of native sports), with the completion of some reform works that, at the same time, have allowed the creation of a fronton with “frares” to be able to practice, also in Ondara, this modality of Valencian pilota.

The project has had a budget of 19.949 euros, and has received a subsidy from the Department of Education, Research, Culture and Sports, within the call for subsidies from the General Directorate of Sports assigned to the improvement, expansion, and repair of sports facilities for the year 2020. The works carried out allow a better use of the facilities and an increase in the Valencian pilota game, both in Valencian fronton, and in the frares modality.

July 10 will be the regional championship

On July 10, this new field enters the regional circuit of "frontó amb frares" of the Federació de Pilota Valenciana, and will host the regional championship of this modality.

The fronton located in the Municipal Sports Center of Ondara has been adapted to the Valencian fronton modality through a series of modifications, and the infrastructure has also been improved by installing a horizontal metal mesh (since the lands adjacent to the fronton are orchards and it is common for balls to be lost). The existing space between the rebound wall and the new one has been used to create a small pediment with frares.

The frare is a form of Valencian pilota that is practiced on a track closed by four walls (trinquet en frares), where the fronton wall, the two lateral walls (walls), and the rebound wall are distinguished, being the “frares ”The particularity of this game (they are two vertical bezels that join the walls with the pediment and that end in a point at the top, and their purpose is to provoke rapid and unexpected rebounds).

The remodeling works have consisted in the construction of a block wall that forms the rebound wall of the pediment at a distance of 25 meters from the pediment. The performance has also involved the execution of the tambourine and the painting of game lines. On the other hand, another wall has been built that closes the existing space between the new rebound wall and the previous one, thus creating a space that serves as a small court to play the frares modality. A horizontal metal net has also been installed in the area adjacent to the front wall, to prevent the loss of balls.
