When will the new Quisi viaduct of Line 9 of the TRAM d'Alacant open in Benissa?

August 04 from 2022 - 13: 59

Today work has begun on the new Quisi viaduct on Line 9 (Benidorm-Dénia) of the Alicante TRAM. An essential section so that the Department of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility can finish the modernization work on the line.

How much did it cost and when is the work finished?

All the action on the line is costing the Ministry more than 160 million euros. Specifically, the viaduct works have been awarded to UTE FCC Construcción SA- CHM Obras e Infraestructuras SA for 9.857.534 euros.

These works are expected to be completed by July next year., something that will allow the installation of a new viaduct close to the current one. This will also be located on the Barranco del Quisi with an oblique alignment with respect to the previous one and a length of 370 meters.

The Minister of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, Rebeca Torró, accompanied by the managing director of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana, Anaïs Menguzzato, has visited the first works of earthworks and foundations and has indicated that "we continue to advance in this Line 9, on which the Teulada-Gata section was launched recently” .

In addition, the councilor has recalled that "we have to deal with three bridges to be able to continue modernizing this Tram line". As for the Quisi, Torró has indicated that the construction of an infrastructure has begun next to the existing one because the new machinery, the new trams, are much heavier.

Likewise, the Minister stressed that "Line 9, as announced by the President of the Generalitat, will be a reality between the end and beginning of the year, regardless of whether the works on the bridges continue".

It has also advanced that from the Ministry, "the power to take advantage of the railway infrastructures that will be unoccupied once the works are finished and convert them into greenways for the enjoyment of all citizens is being studied."

Renovation actions

The current Quisi viaduct was built between 1913 and 1915, as part of the line that connects Alicante and Dénia. The rehabilitation works carried out by FGV in this section have allowed it to remain open to the circulation of the current diesel trains.

However, it has been necessary to propose the construction of a new variant that allows the passage of the new dual trains (electric-diesel) incorporated by FGV as part of the modernization plan for this line.

The investments executed and planned by the Generalitat between Benidorm and Dénia include the renovation of the track, adaptation of viaducts, bridges and slopes, improvements in rolling stock and the improvement of security, communications and energy facilities.

The objective of these investments is to be able to maintain the operation guaranteeing the quality of the service and, in turn, acquire the quality standards of the rest of the FGV network in Alicante.

This action, like the rest carried out on Line 9, is likely to be co-financed by the European Union.
