Xaló resumes excavations at the archaeological site of Les Hortes

15 June 2022 - 15: 37

This week work has resumed at the archaeological site of Les Hortes de Xaló. The intervention will last about three weeks until July 1. This campaign will continue in the sectors that were opened last year and will deepen knowledge of the deposit, especially with regard to the area of product transformation and also the residential area. Basically, last year's surveys will be expanded, all of which gave positive results in terms of archaeological remains.

The Les Hortes site has two large sectors: one with a large pottery kiln that was used to manufacture construction materials and amphorae. There is also, in the same sector, a settling pond for the treatment of clay. And another sector, which corresponds to a Roman villa associated with the workshop itself. Both with a chronology that goes from the XNUMXst to the XNUMXrd or XNUMXth century after Our Era.

The direction of this campaign is the responsibility of Daniel Mateo Corredor, Francisco Álvarez Tortosa and Ruben Vidal i Bertomeu. The team, made up of university students and volunteers from Xaló and its surroundings, will exceed a dozen people.

The works belong to the second phase of the PGI (General plan of investigation of the Roman territorial articulation in the southern Valencian area: settlement, agriculture and exchange). This research plan is carried out jointly between the Xaló Archaeological and Ethnological Museum and the University of Alicante, specifically the University Institute of Archeology and Historical Heritage.

In the last week, an open day will be organized so that interested people can see the remains before covering the boreholes.
