Next year 2023 the Pego Club de Fútbol turns 100 and its centenary well deserves a special program. New kit, remastering of the anthem, a book, a documentary and more surprises that the town is preparing for club fans. A club that, in the words of the Pegolí Sports Councillor, Raúl Tamarit, is one of the oldest in the region and in the Valencian Community.

One of the most important novelties that will give the official image to the centenary is the logo that brings together the club's shield, the historical chronology and the team's characteristic cry Hello rogets!. Designed by Germà Miralles, several proposals were presented to the club's members in the same Cervantes football field and they were the ones who voted for the most suitable to celebrate the special occasion.

This morning the president of the club, Juan Francisco Frau, the author of the official logo, Germà Miralles, the municipal archivist, Joan Miquel Almela, and the councilor for Sports met to present all the acts and actions that will make up the celebration of the pegolí club . They, together with the mayor of Pego, Enrique Moll, the member of the FFCV, Enrique Ortolà, the representative of the Veterans, José Manuel Giménez, the press correspondent Emilio Ramírez and the former presidents of Pego CF, Eulogio Peiró and Joaquin Pastor, have composed the Centennial Commission that will carry out the celebration.

History and documentation

Pego begins to tell the story of his football club in 1923. A photo with the first official shot at the ball by the mayor of the time, Àngel Sendra Ortolà, becomes the original document that the municipality possesses to make such a statement. However, as the municipal archivist, Joan Miquel Almela Cots, affirms, it is possible that his career dates back a few years, in 1921.

With the aim of preparing all the tribute for the beloved club, Almela has carried out intense research and compilation of graphic and written material. A work that has resulted in a special centenary book with images, many of them unpublished, which has required the help of neighbors and press articles to provide the expert with a faithful chronology of football history in Pego. The book has been edited and will be distributed by the Tivoli publisher from Gandia, so it has not involved any type of cost for the City Council.

Centenary main event

The presentation of the book will be accompanied by a documentary that will collect the history of the pegolí club. In addition, the occasion will be used to recognize the careers of several important figures for Pego, such as the presidents he has had and the best player in his history, whose identity will be revealed on the day of the presentation.

The event will take place at the Municipal Theater on Sunday, November 20, starting at 11:00 a.m. To close the act, the Pegolí group Smoking Souls will also present their new version of the Pego CF anthem that has been recently announced by the band on social networks. Coincidentally, the same day in the afternoon a League match of the 6th group of the First Regional between Pego CF and UE Oliva is scheduled, a full-fledged derby of the Marjal.

The centenary celebration will continue with more events in April next year and in May, when a series of conferences will be scheduled between professionals in the sector, such as referees and renowned players. In addition, during the 2023 Fira i Festes patronals, several veteran matches from the clubs of Pego, Oliva, Dénia and Gandia.

«I hit the Soccer Club. A centennial history (1923-2023)»

Below is the excerpt from the introduction of the centenary book Hit Soccer Club. A centenary history (1923-2023), written by the municipal archivist, Joan Miquel Almela Cots.

Facing the day of flight, dissortadament, we do not have the founding act of our club, the papers that bear witness to the creation and constitution of the sports entity. Nor do we know if they will arrive at Fer-se officially. In some places it has been noted that the club was founded in 1918, 1921 or 1922, but we decided in 1923 to have a new photograph of that year. Surely, and I would accept both sports, after this publication appears the official document of the foundation or any other document that would be thrown between the time clock handles.

Writing the history of this club has not been easy because the lack of documentation is considerable. Així com we do not have the founding document or the club's regulations, nor do we have the book of acts, nor the old federative acts, etc. Per all això, this history alone has been able to be based on the photographs, the press retalls, the writings in the festival books, and also the oral memory through the interviews that we have been able to carry out in the darrers anys.

From the early years of the past century, football is going to become the majoritari esport to the dispossessed people of the pilota -tot i tindre trinquet- that sembla s'arrelà more als pobles de les valls d'interior. It could not be otherwise when we observe the photographs of the first football camp, of considerable dimensions and good constructive invoice. It will not last long because the land on its location is soon to be dedicated to the urbanization of cases, the current street Pere Sala i, both, it seems that soccer will disappear for some time to the people.

Some years later, coinciding with the construction of the new school group, they managed to get the adjacent lots to dedicate them to a soccer field. The construction will be in the hands of the football players and will be inaugurated at the end of the year 1931. During the Second Republic we can affirm, sens cap dubte, that football will see a time of maximum splendor, captained by the anomenat aleshores Pego Soccer club. Tanmateix, the environment of political and social confrontation that is alive and is for Pego affected soccer, which was divided there as well as the people. The Civil War ended with many things, massa i tot, but also with local and regional football.

In the middle of the post-war period, football became a força i, under the name of Education and Rest Pego, was registered in the Valencian Football Federation for the 1941-42 season. Des d'aleshores, the official outfit will be that of red and blue, thus displacing the original clothing that was white and black. Since then, as well, bearing the name of the 1963-64 season, our club has always competed officially from the third regional to the third division. A great balance for a modest team that will be one of the first in the region to compete, together with Dénia, just after the Civil War.

The postwar period is going to be difficult for everyone and for everyone, and for soccer too. However, the people hi havien greats and bons futbolistes who, both Daltabaixos, swarmed with dignity for the second regional end of the year 1958 in which I was promoted to the first regional. The consolidation of the club goes together with successes and in 1959 I got promoted to the third division, a whole historical milestone, and even more so in those times, when I was the first soccer team in the region to play the third division. Amb l'ascens, l'ED Pego changed the name of the Pego Club de Futbol, a denomination that has lasted until today. They will be només three seasons, but gaudírem of great players in our club and d'equipos de renom in our camp de futbol Cervantes.

The category was, however, a great massa suit for a people like Pego, and it is to pay for the excesses with an important sporting and economic crisis that will not raise the cap, almenys, ends at the end of the seven years and beginning of the future. After the years of sporting misery, in the darrest times of the dictatorship and the first years of democracy, we arrived at the recovery and prosperity, especially the second time we rose to the third division of the year 1988. Named for a capricious federative restructuring is va relegated to preferent in 1993, but in 1996 they were able to celebrate the third promotion to the third division in the history of the club. They are going to keep the third division, along with some important successes with the promotion to second division B, at the end of 2009. The club is going to keep the category of preferred, it will last for a season, at the end of 2021 it is It will drop to the first regional, coinciding with the evil Covid-19 pandemic.

Our people have given birth to great and great players who have played in important teams, and our club has had the honor of sharing with foreign players some of whom will play in the first division. It has been very positive that nomé hi has made a single football club, it has also helped that there will not be an internal rivalry in the town between two different teams, such as Gandia, Dénia or other towns. Here, in Pego, the subsidiary in the third or second regional division has not supposed -quasi mai- a competition with the first team. Each team had the same philosophy and the main team always had a nurse more than the youth players than the affiliates.

Soccer, as a social phenomenon, has a great importance in the identity of the people. The presidents, the directius, the players and the soccer fans form a collectivity fully identified with a club, with a town to the cap and the fi, and also a feeling of belonging and solidarity fruit of the common interests that surround this sport in particular. Yes, like in other esports, of course, but I allow you to say that you face football still, I felt the king of sports, and I hope that you don't feel more to the detriment or menyspreu de cap altre.

Soccer at the local level does not generate political identities with other clubs, such as Valencia, Barça or Madrid. The sphere of local football does not go beyond the region or the province and, therefore, the rivals are more direct, in terms of politics, among the poor. Over the years, centuries, we have seen the eternal rivals, some excessive times, both towns and teams like Gandia, l'Oliva, Dénia or Xàbia. Ancient rivalries that go back to the origins of the club and that, common or not, among fans there is the idea that football is something more than an esport. Rivalitats that have no more focus or ammunition than the one seen if the football team of a Guanya village on the other side, with a species of nothing more than tribal rivalries or like Sanchis Guarner, where "the Valencian villages talk about each other" dels altres».

Soccer, as a spectacle that it is, is not res sense l'afició. Camp Cervantes, if he could talk, would say that he is proud of the rogeta hobby because he has found company in the millors and in the pitjors moments. A hobby that has remained demanding but tolerant, critical but constant, and that is as old as or more than the club itself. Hundred years of successes and failures, joys and sorrows, but, al capdavall, hundred years of history, and now not all the people or all the football clubs can celebrate.
