Theatre in schools: Vall d'Ebo and Vall de Gallinera, the first to premiere works

January 13 from 2025 - 15: 54

Last Friday, the Vall d'Ebo public school and the CEIP Joanot Martorell experienced a magical day. With great enthusiasm, the actress Mónica Palacios from Moni Poppins & CIA and the musician Rubén Suárez brought to the classrooms 'Gulliver's Travels', creating an experience full of magic, learning and smiles. These schools hosted the first sessions of the 29th Theatre in Schools Campaign in the Marina Alta.

This campaign was launched at the Puig school to demand the reopening of the centre after nine years of inactivity, thanks to the initiative of the Antidespoblament Eboviu association. This association aims to reopen the centre, with the collaboration of the city council and the Ministry of Education. "We have finally reopened the school with 8 students and 2 classrooms: one for infants (0-6 years) and another for primary school, where 3 more students were enrolled in January, now totalling 11," explained its director.

These two towns, at risk of depopulation, have hosted this play in their schools, bringing children a theatrical proposal based on proximity and interaction once again. The campaign, which will visit participating schools and towns for the rest of the year, is once again being run by a company from the region. On this occasion, Moni Poppins & CIA is in charge of carrying out a performance based on the great classic of English literature Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, where Lemuel Gulliver embarks on three fantastic adventures that lead him to discover extraordinary countries. The artists have enriched the play through music and the adaptation of the original stories to the stage language, with carefully crafted staging that seeks to cultivate the imagination of the little ones. The company adapts the language and the performances to each level, from Infant to 6th grade of Primary.

Sergi Ferrús Peris, president of the Mancomunitat, declared: «Once again, MACMA is bringing theatre to the region's schools with the campaign - and it's already 29! - 'Theatre in Schools'. At the service, as always, of the citizens of the Marina Alta and, in this case, with the added value of involving the youngest people. This year they will be able to enjoy the adventures of Gulliver, led by Moni Poppins, who will visit 34 schools, with the joy of having the presence of the newly opened school in Ebo. For this reason, we have started the campaign there and in the Vall de Gallinera to reinforce our will to work against depopulation and give visibility to this growing problem within our region».

The campaign is coordinated by MACMA (Mancomunitat Comarcal de la Marina Alta), which values the fact that it has already achieved more than two decades of theatre programming with professional companies from the region.

Actress Mónica Palacios thanked the trust placed in her team and said: “It was exciting to see how the students participated with so much energy and enthusiasm, creating a very special connection. As a group, we are deeply satisfied and grateful for the warm welcome they gave us. This performance was just the beginning of a journey full of proposals full of tenderness and creativity, thought up with all our hearts for them by the MACMA Theatre in Schools Campaign.”

As has been the case for the past six years, the Culture department of the Mancomunitat has prepared a website with recommended readings by age, ideas for themed crafts and even pre-existing teaching materials so that educational centres can work on the work in a cross-cutting way with related activities.

The Culture team stressed that the teaching materials and recommended readings are a perfect complement to the Theatre Campaign, since their main function is to facilitate the work of the Marina Alta teachers. They also expressed their hope that the campaign will be a complete success for another year.
