Pego City Council, through the Sports and Culture departments, has organised a series of activities that will take place throughout this week with the aim of promoting Valencian pilota, the traditional sport of the Valencian Community.
Activities began today, Monday 23 September, with the inauguration of a point of interest in the Carmen Alemany Bay library. This space, which changes its theme every month, will be dedicated to pilota during this week. Visitors will be able to consult a selection of books on this sport, during opening hours.
On Wednesday 25 September, an exhibition will open in the same library, with photographs and objects related to Valencian pilota. The exhibition, which will be available until 1 October, will include material loaned by the Municipal Archive of Pego and the Museo del Genovés, and will offer a local and regional view of this native sport.
On Friday, September 27, the neighbors will have a double date. At 17:00 p.m., on Pere Sala Street, the members of the Escola de Pilota de Pego will play a game. Later, at 19:30 p.m., in the Carmen Alemany Bay library, the book will be presented. Trench coats by Sergi Durbà, a work that tells the story of the trinquets, emblematic places where pilota was played and which, according to the author, "accumulate so many beautiful and endearing stories."
The closing of this week dedicated to Valencian pilota will be on Saturday 28 September with another match, this time between the teams of the Club de Pilota Valenciana Pego and the Club de Les Valls, also on Pere Sala street, at 10:30 am.
The Councillor for Sports, Raül Tamarit, has highlighted the importance of these initiatives to revitalise interest in pilota in the municipality. «The Valencian pilota has always been present in our culture, although it suffered a drop in followers and participation for many years. Now it is re-emerging thanks to the phenomenal work of the Escola de Pilota de Pego, which encourages the hobby from the base, with the boys and girls of our town who enjoy this sport so typical of us. The week dedicated to pilota is one more step, and in the coming years we will continue working to increase the presence of this sport in the streets and among the residents of Pego», said Tamarit.
