Pego City Council has presented a wide range of activities to commemorate November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with the aim of fighting against one of the scourges that still persists in today's society: gender-based violence.
The starting shot will be on Monday, November 11, when the poster competition organized by Infojove ends. The winning image will be used to advertise the 25N demonstration.
The next meeting will be on November 20 at 10:45 a.m. with the delivery of a mailbox to the Feminist Action Group (GAF) of the IES Enric Valor de Pego. This mailbox will allow anonymous complaints related to any type of gender-based violence to be collected, both from direct victims and from people close to them who wish to report situations of abuse.
On November 21st, the “Vacuna't contra la violència de gènere” (Get vaccinated against gender violence) event will take place all morning at the Mercat Municipal. Organized in collaboration with Dones Cabal, this activity aims to raise awareness among the local population about the importance of eradicating gender violence.
On the same day, at 19:00 p.m., a round table moderated by Elvira Cambrils will be held. The event will feature the participation of Josep Vidal, coordinator of equality at the IES Enric Valor, and other young representatives, in an effort to promote debate and awareness of this serious problem.
Children's activities and demonstration
On Saturday, November 23, at 11:00 a.m., the children of Pego will be able to enjoy the storytelling Arturo and Clementina by Adela Turín, presented by the company Ni fu, ni fa. Then, at 12:00, there will be a children's demonstration on Passeig Cervantes against gender-based violence, involving the youngest children in the fight for a more equal society.
The programme will culminate on 25 November with a rally in Plaza Maria Cambrils. Participants will initially meet in Plaza del Mercado to take part in a march that will end in Plaza Maria Cambrils, where a manifesto will be read and a performance will be carried out by young volunteers from Amicita, a group of theatre students. This performance will be a tribute to the figure of Maria Cambrils, a feminist and socialist born in Pego.
The Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Paula Orihuel, said: "Unfortunately, every 25N we are forced to demonstrate, because there is still a lot of gender-based violence in our society. We must put an end to it and to do so, the whole of society must be involved, especially we must raise awareness among the youngest children, because they are the future."
Awareness campaign
This year, the Department of Equality has launched an awareness campaign aimed at all citizens. The City Council will distribute information leaflets to raise awareness about the presence of gender violence in society and explain how to detect it. In addition, posters will be placed with "direct and forceful messages that seek to raise awareness and put the focus on the aggressor, so that he knows, so that it is clear to him, that in our society there cannot be any hint of sexist violence," concluded Orihuel.
