A tour to explore the history and heritage of Pego. The Town Hall has installed a series of information panels so that visitors can take an urban route that takes them to thirteen points in the centre of the town. This is a project by the Mancomunitat de Turismo de Pego i Les Valls, with which a series of small panels have been installed that provide information on the different historical and heritage points.
heritage sites to visit (via QR codes) and also indicates the route to take. A complete overview of local history is offered through emblematic buildings that have marked the development of the city.
With this route, visitors can take a tour through the history of Pego, starting in the 13th century, when the Christians settled on the former Muslim site of Uxola, creating a walled town with three entrance gates. The social life of the town revolved around the main square, where the Church of the Assumption and the Thursday market were located.
The tour takes visitors to the Casino of the Regional Agrarian Right, which was an important center of political activity in the 30s. Also included is the home of Monsieur Antoine, a couturier who achieved great fame in Paris and Madrid, making suits for European royalty and nobility.
Visitors also go through the Room Portal (or de l'Horta), the only one that remains of the old walls, built in 1291; they pass by the House of Culture, an old stately residence of the Torres-Sala family, by the Parish Home, until reaching the Old Hospital, which hosts temporary exhibitions.
The tour also takes you to the Ecce-Homo Chapel, built between 1759 and 1785; along Sant Llorenç Street, where you will find the Casa de las Torres, which preserves part of the medieval wall and two defence towers.
We also visit the Town Hall Square and pass under the Porches, where the 'Hostal Comercio' and several traditional shops used to be. On Sant Lluís Street we stop at the birthplace of Fernando Ferrando García, a priest and teacher who was prominent in the education of deaf-mutes.
The route also passes by the house of Felipe Miralles, a businessman linked to the wine trade. The tour ends in the Market Square, where we find the Casino, opened in 1925 as a social centre for high society and hunters before the Civil War. The neighbouring building was the former Convent of Sant Antoni de Padua, demolished in the 70s to build the municipal market.
Finally, the square also houses the San Juan de Dios Senior Residence, which was formerly the Convent of the Franciscan Tertiaries of the Immaculate Conception. “The new panels are another tool for visitors to learn about the most important and outstanding sites in our town. The project began in 2022 when the Tourism department established the stops on the route with the relevant information. In 2023, the design of the panels was drawn up and they have now been placed at the points along the route. We have planned to produce informative brochures for 2025 to complement this,” explains the Councillor for Tourism, Ricardo Sendra.
