The plenary session of Pego approved yesterday, with the votes of the government team (PSPV and Ciutadans Pego) and the opposition groups Compromís and Partido Popular, the III Municipal Plan for Equal Opportunities between men and women.

An instrument to improve the lives of the residents of the municipality and whose main objective is to overcome inequalities between women and men in Pego. A document that has been prepared by Pro Actives, equity and equality consultancy and in which a series of guiding principles are established, essential to achieve a more egalitarian society.

Among them, the gender approach stands out, which allows reorganizing the usual work processes of public authorities to incorporate gender equality in all fields of action. This third guide also takes into account the various intersections between gender and the linguistic, cultural, racial, sexual, economic or functional diversity of women.

It is also committed to increasing the participation and leadership of women, as well as guaranteeing an economic endowment of the budget to achieve results.

“Despite the great advances in terms of equality, there are still many barriers that must be eliminated to obtain a society free of discrimination and sexist violence. It is true that there are numerous regulatory advances in terms of equality and the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence, but these laws are not enough if they do not include strategies and instruments that make real change possible”, said the Councilor for Equality, Merxe Bolta.

In defending the plan, the mayor also pointed to the local administration as “responsible for promoting the implementation of the necessary changes, due to its proximity to the public. It is essential to establish a plan to combat from all areas all the historical inequalities that women in our municipality have suffered and continue to suffer, ”she concluded.

The proposal presented by the government team had the support of PSPV, Ciutadans Pego, Partido Popular and Compromís. In fact, the mayor of the nationalist group, Anna Sastre, thanked Bolta and the company in charge of drawing up the plan "for contacting us and having listened to us, as well as having taken into account some of our points."

The III Equality Plan had the support of the Ciudadanos group, although its representative, Simón Ortolá, assured that “he is in favor of equality between men and women, but I believe that the public administration should not dedicate itself to instructing neighbors, it seems that he has to say how people should act”.

For his part, Bolta recalled that the document, "in addition to being necessary because there are still obvious differences between men and women, is essential to qualify for future grants."

Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy

The plenary session also approved, with the votes in favor of the government team (PSPV and Ciutadans Pego) and those of the Popular Party (Compromís voted against and Ciudadanos abstained), the Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy.

As explained by the mayor of the Environment, Laura Castellà, it is a document with which the signatory municipalities assume the commitment, through a series of guidelines, "the commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and other gases of greenhouse effect by at least 40% by the year 2030. And also to increase resilience to the impacts of climate change, as well as alleviate energy poverty”.

The person in charge of the Environment remarked that a total of 128 municipalities have already adhered to this action plan "with general goals and objectives dictated by Europe, the Central State and the Generalitat". The Compromís group, which decided to vote against, criticized the "generality of the document" and lacked "ambition".

Investment

Another of the points that the plenary approved was a credit modification of 545.000 euros that was destined for direct investments in the municipality. As explained by the mayor of the Treasury, Juanjo Arbona, “a dissuasive parking lot will be built, sidewalks and streets of the municipality will be repaired. Part of the money will also be used to renovate the dependencies of the Agrarian Chamber; and new benches will also be installed in the municipal parks”.
The economic modification had the votes in favor of the government team (PSPV and Ciutadans de Pego) and the Popular Party abstained. While Compromís and Ciudadanos voted against.
