Pego will preserve the market roof and a 1960 mural in the construction of a new car park

The City Council of Pego has announced the tender for the construction project of a new car park. This will be located where the old health center was located, on Llavador street. The building will have to be demolished, but it will preserve part of the history that the place has housed.

The project will be fully financed by Pegolino consistory, the amount of which amounts to 299.533,06 euros. The action plans to tear down the old building and make room for 24 vehicles, of which two will be used for users with reduced mobility.

Preserve history

As explained by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Laura Castellà, the old roof of the market that was located there at the end of the 60s will be maintained. “It was a circumstantial measure, since work was being done on the facilities that were going to house the municipal market, where it is currently located”, explains the municipal archivist, Joan Miquel Almela.

Before moving the market, this area housed a laundry, inaugurated in 1927. "In 66 the infrastructure for the market was built, a roof supported by pillars, basically to shelter from the rain and the sun," explains Almela.

On this infrastructure was built, between 1981 and 1983, the building that is still standing and served for years as a health center. “But since 1999, when the new building was built in front of Passeig Michel, it has served as a warehouse and space for some associations. These entities will be relocated to other municipal offices when the car park is built”, remarks Castellà.

Recovery of the 1967 mural

In addition to the roof, the works will respect "and will try to recover" a large mural dated 1967 that still remains on one of the walls that surround the enclosure and in which you can see the price list of some of the products that They were sold in the market at that time. “It is a piece of history that we want to preserve”, clarifies the mayor of Urbanism.

The new infrastructure “will increase the number of parking spaces in the area, a demand from residents for years. It was a necessary work”, has remarked the person in charge of Urbanism.

Regarding the process, Castellà remarks that the bidding process has already been completed, "we hope that the works will begin as soon as possible so that the residents of the area have more space to park their vehicles."
