On November 12, the town of Pegolina will receive the visit of 500 canaries of the Llarguet breed, one of the native birds of the Valencian Community. During the day, the birds will compete in the sixth edition of the national championship organized by the 'Club Amigos del Llarguet' and in which the Pego City Council will collaborate.

In this event, which will take place at the Municipal Market, there will be participants from different parts of Spain (Mallorca, Galicia, Madrid, the Valencian Community, among others) and also from countries such as Portugal or the Netherlands. In fact one of the members of the jury is of Dutch origin. He will share tasks with two other members, from Cádiz and Estepona.

The contest in Pego

Despite the fact that in this type of contest, there are usually different categories: singing or beauty; In the championship that will take place in Pego, the participants will only be eligible for prizes for 'form and position' related to the canon of beauty. They explain from the organization that there will be up to 21 groups and a total of 7 trophies will be distributed, seven winners from among the more than 500 participants.

Pego's will be the sixth edition of this championship, which is held every year at a point in the Community. "The first edition took place in La Vila, the second and third championships were held in Orba, the fourth and fifth in Oropesa, so Pego will be the fourth municipality to host this competition", they explain from the organization.

Llarguet variety of canary

The Llarguet canary emerged in the Valencian Community between the 40s and 50s. The shape of the body of this variety of bird is stylized, resembling that of a cylinder. Both the chest and the back are thin and without roundness, increasing the feeling of being in front of a thin bird.

The wings, relating to the rest of the bird's proportions, are very long and thin. The tail, long and fine, ends in the shape of an 'M'. The neck, of medium proportion, is slender, supporting a small, oval head with a small, conical beak. The plumage is short, compact and smooth. According to the organizers, it is an animal, “mainly bred in captivity. They are animals that are very well cared for. Only in the Canary Islands is the wild canary found”.

Both from the organization and from the City Council they invite all the residents of Pego to visit and learn about the competition. "It is better that they do it in the afternoon, because in the morning the jury needs calm to be able to assess and decide who wins."
