Pedreguer continues its collaborative work with the Saharawi people

19 October 2022 - 17: 55

On October 18, the councilor of Solidarity of Pedreguer, Ferran Lloret, attended the meeting called by the Saharawi Delegation of Alicante with the aim of dealing with issues related to solidarity and international cooperation in Western Sahara.

Lehbib Alisalem, Saharawi delegate, and Lloret were able to discuss issues such as the current situation in Western Sahara, which continues to be militarily besieged by the Moroccan army. These events, with bombardments and attacks almost daily, are further complicating the lives of the people who live in the Saharawi camps.

Second phase of the water sanitation project

The project that, for the second consecutive year, the Pedreguer City Council is carrying out with the Saharawi people was also highlighted. The objective of this project is to ensure that, little by little, the Daira de Amgala and the Wilaya del Aaiun have a sanitation of the water system.

In the second phase, a total of 20 vulnerable families will see and drink water in good condition with the installations and advice on cleaning and maintenance of the tanks. In addition, this fact will also boost local trade, since the stores of the local market of Aaiun will be the places of supply.

Meeting in Pedreguer

On the other hand, it was agreed to start studying the possibility of holding a meeting in Pedreguer with representatives of the twin town, the Daira de Amgala. In this meeting, the institutional tasks related to twinning will be taken up together with the participation of the local Saharawi community. An attempt will also be made to work on a participatory process, in which the people of the Sahara may be the ones who decide the priorities of future international cooperation projects with that area that the Pedreguer City Council wants to continue carrying out.

Lloret valued this technical and institutional meeting very positively and wanted to emphasize: "All the help that can be sent to the Sahara is necessary due to the conditions in which people live". Finally, the alderman recalled: "For the purposes of international law, Western Sahara continues to be a Spanish colony, therefore, the final objective must be the celebration of the self-determination referendum of Western Sahara."
