Last Friday, November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was commemorated, and from the Department of Equality of the Ondara City Council, headed by Raquel Mengual, a series of activities were coordinated with the educational centers of the municipality to make a joint cry against this scourge.
In fact, at IES Xebic a static representation took place at the entrance of the center at 10:45 a.m. An act of rejection exclusively for the students of the secondary school that had the musical accompaniment of Mirela Gomes on the piano. At the same time, at the Sanchis Guarner school, the mural “Alza el vuelo” was created during the school day: a symbolic plastic work based on paper butterflies that contained messages against gender violence.
In the afternoon, the commemorative act of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women continued with a performance at the Prado Pier where thirty-eight empty seats were set up in memory of the thirty-eight women murdered this year by their couples in the Spanish state.
The installation, with the name, age and place of residence of the victims printed on the back of the chairs, struck the audience for its conciseness. Next, the neighbors who participated in the act deposited a bouquet of violet flowers in each of the chairs in which the women who died this year were honored. The names of the victims, as well as the commemorative text, were intoned by the Councilor for Equality, Raquel Mengual.
On the other hand, it should be remembered that in the ordinary plenary session of the Ondara City Council held the day before, Thursday, November 24, all the political groups (PSPV-Compromís Government Team, PP and Citizens) had unanimously approved the proposal of the municipal groups of the Ondara City Council on the occasion of November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, in which the bloody data of this social scourge are reflected: not in vain, as stated in the document «In Spain, since 2003, 1.165 women and 47 girls and boys have been murdered and since 2009, almost 2 million complaints of gender violence and more than half a million protection orders have been filed».
A deep-rooted problem that the municipal plenary session, representing Ondara society, ratified through the firm commitment of the Ondara City Council against gender violence, and in defense of women's rights, the eradication of any type of sexist violence and the action of combating any denialist discourse and political positioning that denies gender violence or rejects public policies focused on its total eradication.
From the Department of Equality, as well as from the Equality Commission from where this program has been conceived, the participation and activism of the educational centers of Ondara were appreciated, as well as the sensitivity and assistance of the public present at the central act of the day that culminated the commemorative acts against sexist violence.
