Ondara has experienced Holy Week 2024 marked by massive participation and an agenda full of religious events. Throughout the entire week, with the exception of Holy Monday, where the procession was suspended due to the rains, numerous events have been carried out that have brought together faithful and visitors in the streets of the town.
This year, Holy Week in Onda has had a varied program that included traditional events such as the Easter Sunday Gathering, the Song of Sorrows and the Passion Play, which attracted an audience estimated at a thousand spectators. The processions, especially the one on Good Friday, were also notable for their massive participation.
The celebration began with the Song of Sorrows, which took place from March 16 to 22 in the parish church of Santa Ana, with the choral performance of the septenary of the Song of Sorrows, culminating on March 22 with the final performance from the Hymn to the Virgin of Soledad. This work, composed by Gonzalo Ortolà Marí from Huelva in 1924, has been a deep-rooted manifestation of local devotion since then.
On Saturday, March 23, the Ondara Passion was performed with meticulous detail, impressive sets and costumes, and with credible performances that captivated the audience. This year the 30th anniversary of this representation was celebrated, which reached historic participation figures.
On Sunday, March 24, the Prado de Ondara building hosted the Palm Sunday mass, followed by the celebration of the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, with the blessing of branches and palms, and the procession to the grounds of the Prado, where the mass was celebrated.
Holy Week in Ondara continued with daily processions and events. The Holy Burial Procession, held on Good Friday, was especially notable, attracting hundreds of people from all over the region. To culminate the events, on Easter Sunday the traditional Meeting of the Risen Lord with his Mother was held in the Plaza Mayor, followed by the launching of rockets.
The seven brotherhoods of the town actively participated in the celebrations, thus contributing to keeping alive the tradition and religious fervor that characterize Holy Week in Ondara.
