Ondara seeks to persuade families to vote yes to Valencian in schools with a campaign

January 14 from 2025 - 11: 44

The Department of Linguistic Normalisation of the Ondara Town Council, headed by Rosa Ana Marí, has launched an awareness campaign aimed at families with school-aged children, with the aim of raising awareness and encouraging families to vote for Valencian in the consultation on the base language that the Department of Education will carry out at the end of January 2025. The campaign, under the slogan "Triem sí al valencià", has materialised in an explanatory video detailing the advantages of choosing an education in Valencian as the base language. This video will be distributed through social networks to reach the entire educational community, according to Rosa Ana Marí, who has encouraged families to participate and opt for Valencian.

Although the Ministry of Education has not yet set the exact date of the consultation, it is expected to take place at the end of this month of January. This consultation will be carried out to allow the legal representatives of students, in public and private schools, to decide on the base language (Spanish or Valencian) in which their children will study from the 2025-2026 academic year. The consultation will be telematic and open to the participation of legal representatives of students in the second cycle of infant school, all years of primary school, and first, second and third years of ESO.

In addition, Rosa Ana Marí, who also holds the position of Education Councillor in Ondara, recalled that in December 2024 the Municipal School Council of Ondara, made up of representatives of the educational community, approved a motion in which the Ministry of Education was asked to withdraw the "draft order" that regulated the consultation. According to the Municipal School Council, said order and Law 1/2024 "segregate and encourage unnecessary divisions between students, families and the educational community", among other problems related to the offer and distribution of places.

Despite the objections, the consultation process will be carried out as planned. For this reason, the Department of Language Normalisation has decided to strengthen the "Triem sí al valencià" campaign to continue promoting the use of Valencian in education.

The important thing is Castilian… about 500 million people speak it, and then there is English… Valencian, like other minor languages, has a local scope, knowledge does not take up space, but you have to go for what is useful first…

Wir sind in Spanien und sollten auch spanisch sprechen. Wir Ausländer können weder in unseren Heimatländern night in den hiesigen Sprachschulen valencianisch lernen.
