The mass of cold air that has settled in the country this week is leaving striking records of the decrease in thermometers after a winter that has been hard to come by. In the Marina Alta, temperatures have dropped significantly since last Wednesday and, according to the State Meteorological Agency, so will the snow level in the coming days.
It will not be this weekend, but on Monday the level of snow in the province of Alicante it will go down to 400 m, although later it will gradually rise, reaching 500 m on Tuesday and between 600 and 700 m on Wednesday and Thursday. Also from the beginning of the week, the maximum temperatures will generally drop between two and three degrees, as will the minimum.
If the prediction holds and the drop in temperatures persists, snow could make an appearance in the region during those days. According to MeteoParcent, a storm pumping cold air from central Europe could lead to the formation of more storms in the area that can bring precipitation and, with it, the occasional snowfall, despite changing patterns.
This possibility is clearly found in the interior of the region. There are not many towns in the Marina Alta that are located between 400 and 600 m above sea level, but there are several points where the mentioned minimum is exceeded.
Beginning with the villages with an altitude higher than 400 m, we find the Vall de Laguar, with 439 m at the most centered point of the population center, according to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN). In this town, the minimum temperatures will remain between 0 and 2ºC between Sunday and Thursday.
For its part, Castell de Castells has 549 m in its population center. There, between Sunday and Thursday, the minimum will be -1 and 1ºC. And finally, Vall d'Alcalà is the municipality with the highest altitude, 639 m. During the same days, the minimum will be between -2 and 1ºC.
Although the phenomenon is more improbable in the population centers, perhaps the mountains of the Marina Alta will be the protagonists of next week, since they are where the highest points of the region are located.
Points like the Castell de the Solana between Alcalalí, Xaló and Llíber, the Serra de Bèrnia in the southern interior of the region, the Serra d'Alfaro by Castell de Castells, the Tossal del Xarpolar in the Vall de Gallinera, El Cocoll between Benigembla and Castell de Castells or the Serra del Carrascar de Parcent have the necessary altitude to favor the conditions of a snowfall, and perhaps they are the perfect setting to gather lovers of the cold next week.
