The 5 lungs of the Marina Alta: municipalities that absorb more CO2 than they emit

Climate change is a reality. And to reject this statement is to ignore the undeniable problems that the Earth has been suffering for (too many) years.

Irreversible changes in climate, such as increased weather extremes, have caused impacts difficult to reverse. Nature itself or the human being is unable to adapt to these phenomena at a normal rate.

Regarding global warming, it is estimated that in the next 20 years the temperature reaches or exceeds 1,5ºC more. If this figure were raised to 2ºC, the extreme heat relevant to the proper functioning of agriculture and the health of people would be exceeded too often.

The point is that, for warming to stabilize, it is vitally important reduce net carbon dioxide emissions to zero. If this goal were achieved, that greenhouse gas emissions were positioned at net zero, we would achieve that global warming would decrease little by little.

To observe the position of the Valencian Community regarding these data, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition of the Generalitat Valenciana has published a inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on each of the 541 municipalities of the Community.

The towns of the Marina Alta that absorb the most CO2

The figures collected by the Ministry are based on the year 2019, the year before the pandemic so that, in the future, it can be compared with another year of normal activity. To get to know which are the localities that absorb more tons of carbon dioxide than they produce, the inventory presents three facts remarkable.

The first, the gross greenhouse gas emissions, that is, the tons of CO2 emitted by each locality. The second data provided is the fixation of tons of CO2, this is the amount that they manage to absorb thanks to their forest areas, wood products and agriculture.

And finally, the number in tons of net GHG emissions. This data is especially relevant, since reaching the zero net emissions means that the activities carried out in the area do not cause any impact on the climate.

Reach zero or reach negative numbers in this last data brings about a balance that allows us to state which are the municipalities that absorb more CO2 than they emit. These are the five lung municipalities of the Marina Alta:

5. Vall d'Ebo

The gross emissions of Vall d'Ebo represent 1.214,70 tons of CO2. Thanks to the green areas in the area, Ebo fixes (or absorbs) 1.647,03 tons of CO2. Therefore, in the municipality they finally remain -432,34 net tons emitted into the atmosphere.

4. Benigembla

The next town that cleans the most CO2 in the Marina Alta is Benigembla. This has a gross emission of 1.848,18 tons of greenhouse gases, but instead sets 3.106,50. which allows you to have a net GHG emissions of -1.258,32.

3. Valley of Gallinera

Within the top 3 is the Vall de Gallinera. It emits 2.761,60 tons of CO2, but, on the other hand, absorbs 6.778,53 tons per year. In this way, the net GHG emissions in Ebo are -4.016,93.

2. Castell de Castells

In second position is Castells de Castells, which has 2.815,15 gross GHG emissions and fixes 8.519,46 tons of CO2. So finally their net emissions of greenhouse gases are -5.704,32 tons.

1. Vall d'Alcala

Finally, the municipality that absorbs more CO2 than it emits in the region is Vall d'Alcalà. The town's gross greenhouse gas emissions are the lowest. They are only 953,92 tons of CO2. In addition, it absorbs or fixes 8.599,31 tons, therefore, its net GHG emissions are the highest, with -7.645,39.

Despite their excellent data, all these municipalities they only account for 2,6% of net GHG emissions of the High Navy. A relatively low figure, since, extrapolated to the entire planet, it is a real trifle.

For everything to go well, globally Earth should reach net zero emissions by the middle of this century. Therefore, the countdown is becoming more and more incipient.

It seems to me that the title is a bit exaggerated to call it «THE 5 LUNGS OF THE MARINA ALTA», FOR 2 bushes and 4 pine. cheap journalism.

What a disaster in the countryside near the Gorgos River. The police put up tape to prohibit driving during the last weekend because of the rain. The rain was but the tape is still on the trees, sticks and other things. I threw some but maybe the police can throw all of them because the police know where they have put them.
Better for the environment and nature in the field.
    Thank you very much.
