The Marina Alta has been on a growth trend for three years in a row. In 2022, the region registered 184.284 people registered in the census, gaining 4.633 people, in reference to the 2019 census, which stood at 179.651 inhabitants. This is reflected in the latest data from the National Statistics Institute with the update as of January 1, 2022.
In general, all the municipalities continue to grow in the number of registered people. However, the INE graphs show how the majority of towns in the region experienced a decrease in population between 2011 and 2015. Less Beniarbeig, which from 2010 to 2015 remained at approximately 1.900 inhabitants and since 2015 has been growing until reaching 2.267 people.
This is also the case of Pedreguer, which has gone from registering 7.337 inhabitants in 2015 to 8.280 last year. Or like Ondara, who had 6.617 people on the census in 2015 and now 7.085.
The most worrying data
There are two localities, whose figures are striking due to their decreasing trend. On the one hand, Castell de Castells has not recovered after the population decline in 2011, when it registered 516 people in the census and now has 426.
On the other hand, Murla is the only town in the region that currently registers a negative number. From 2013 to 2019, the local population census followed a negative trend. Despite registering more inhabitants from 2019 (470) to 2021 (549), in 2022 it has lost 9 people registered in the census.
Inhabitants of the Marina Alta in figures
Among the 33 municipalities in the region, the ten of them that have registered the most people registered from one year to the next stand out. It is not surprising that the majority are located on the coast, being the capital, Dénia, the one with the most inhabitants and It is placed among the 20 most populated municipalities of the Valencian Community. Although some towns in the intermediate area of the region also stand out, such as Gata de Gorgos, Pedreguer and El Verger or Orba in the interior.

How come that Denia's population changes from 43.000 to 47.000 back and forth several times within the same week?
