The Vall d'Alcalà invites all visitors to immerse themselves in its past through an urban route that covers the vestiges of the town's history. Linked to the brave Arab vizier Al-Azraq, the only Muslim leader who challenged Jaume I during the conquest of the Kingdom of Valencia, the town has managed to preserve its historical essence in every corner.
The tour begins in Alcalà de la Jovada, where an information panel guides visitors through eight notable points of interest. Each stop is marked with arrows and QR codes in five languages (Valencian, Spanish, English, French and German), allowing for an immersive and accessible experience for tourists from all over the world.
The route begins in Al-Azraq Square, the epicentre of the town, where the town hall and the Virgen del Pilar Church are located, built in 1636 on the remains of an old mosque. A few metres away, the Moorish fountain commemorates the figure of Al-Azraq with a spout sculpted in his honour.
Continuing along Calle de la Torre, visitors can see the remains of an ancient aqueduct that once supplied water to the town. Back in the town centre, the bust of Al-Azraq marks the way to the wash house, a space built in 1928 where women once washed clothes. Opposite, an old oil mill and, at the end of the street, a water mill, now converted into a private home, evoke the importance of the traditional economy.
For the more adventurous, a 600-metre trail leads to the Nevera de Baix, a 1356th-century snow pit used to store ice between layers of straw. History lovers should also visit the deserted Moorish village of L'Atzuvieta, whose oldest documents date back to 1609. Before the expulsion of the Moors in 17, XNUMX families lived in this enclave, which was later occupied by Christian settlers until the beginning of the XNUMXth century. Today, L'Atzuvieta, along with other deserted villages such as la Queirola, la Roca and els Benialís, has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
This project is part of an initiative of the Pego i Les Valls Tourism Association, which promotes the exploration of the area on foot or by bicycle. Those interested can obtain More information on the webpage, where you will also find an application with GPS geolocation to follow the routes easily.
