The new 'Door to Door' waste collection system is already scheduled to be implemented in the urban centre of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. On Monday 10th February, the workers of the municipal public company Poble Net will start collecting waste in front of people's doors. This was announced by the mayor, Miguel Ángel García, The council
of Waste, Javi Cabrera, and the Waste technician, Ignasi Cervera, in a talk that took place yesterday Monday afternoon at the Social Center.
A significant number of residents attended the information session to learn the details of this new system, which consists of leaving waste in front of the door of the house on certain days and times for each fraction. The collection schedule includes the collection of paper and cardboard, organic waste and sanitary textiles (diapers, intimate hygiene products, etc.) on Tuesdays; other waste, glass and sanitary textiles on Wednesdays; plastics and packaging, organic waste and sanitary textiles on Thursdays, and plastics and packaging, organic waste and sanitary textiles on Sundays.
Waste must be taken out to the door between 21:00 p.m. and 22:30 p.m. on the day before the calendar, as is done with the collection of bulky waste. Users must deposit each fraction in its corresponding bin. To do so, the City Council will provide a free kit consisting of two plastic bins with a closing system, one exclusively for organic waste and another to alternate the rest of the fractions according to the calendar; organic bags and a calendar specifying which fraction must be taken out each day during 2025 with instructions on the system and the food and products that go in each container.
Information sessions and kit collection
The one on Monday 27th in the afternoon was the first Informative session, but there will be another one Friday January 31, at 10:00 am, at the Social Center. Regarding the collecting the kits, can be collected at the warehouse at Camí Abiar, 2, on Monday 27 January (10:00 to 13:00), Friday 31 January (10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 19:00), Sunday 2 February (10:00 to 13:00), Monday 3 February (10:00 to 13:00) and Friday 7 February (10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 19:00); and at the street market in Plaça de les Pesqueres on Wednesday 29 January and 5 February from 10:00 to 13:00.
Good results from Door to Door
The 'Door to Door' waste collection system has obtained very good results in the areas of Benitatxell where the first pilot test was established. The urbanisations of Les Fonts, Los Molinos and Racó de Nadal went from a separation rate of 12% to 80% in just a few weeks. And this good dynamic is what is also intended to be achieved in the urban centre and in several areas of scattered housing. Regarding the rest of the areas of the
In municipalities where door-to-door service will not be implemented (some urbanisations and scattered areas), closed areas with container batteries will gradually be opened, which will only be accessible to users in these areas.
In general, the figures for this system are usually between 60% and 80% of selective collection, which guarantees compliance with the objectives set by European regulations. On the other hand, the cost of waste disposal will be lower, since less waste (remaining waste) will be sent to the Consorci Mare de Residus landfill; and the income from the management of recyclable materials will be higher. This will help to balance the rate. In addition, the urban image is improved, eliminating the problems associated with containers.
In fact, the change of system in some areas has already resulted in a reduction in costs for dumping at the Consorci Mare waste separation plant in El Campello. On October 4, the financial contributions that all member municipalities of Consorci Mare will have to make in 2025 were approved. Of the total of the 52 towns in the province of Alicante that have joined, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell is the only one that has seen this contribution reduced compared to 2024. In addition, in 2024 the municipality increased the selective collection of waste by 6 percentage points compared to 2023, going from 20% to 26%.
