The Marina Alta is missing the opportunity to generate more solar energy than you think

09 2022 April - 09: 16

If the country can boast of anything, it is enjoying one of the best climates in the world. Above all, the areas bathed by the Mediterranean in which the great protagonist is always the sun.

The use of this resource in recent years has experienced a remarkable boom. So much so that the Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) estimates that in 2021 1.203 MW of new photovoltaic power will be installed in self-consumption facilities. This represents an increase of 101,84% compared to the previous year.

Taking into account that renewable energies are based on natural resources capable of unlimited renewal, it would be a great waste not to benefit from it. And, even more, knowing that they have a low environmental impact.

Specifically, solar energy does not generate greenhouse gases, it allows heat to be generated in addition to electricity and reduces dependence on the large companies in charge of this supply. In short, investing in solar self-consumption produces more advantages than disadvantages in the long term.

The Sustainability Observatory calculated two years ago that Spain has 352.052 hectares of useful roofs capable of housing photovoltaic energy installations. But, narrowing the fence further, the Marina Alta has 700 ha of useful space to produce solar energy, according to data collected from the Idealista real estate information portal.

Therefore, with all that space, only the region would be capable of generating 1.838.222 MWh of solar energy per year. Where the municipality that could produce the most energy would be Dénia, with a potential of 320.815 MWh on 123 hectares of useful roofs for that.
