The Alicante Provincial Council strengthens its commitment to the municipalities of the Marina Alta with the creation of a census of facilities with asbestos

16 December 2024 - 11: 24

The Alicante Provincial Council has announced the preparation of an exhaustive census to identify and plan the removal of asbestos in facilities in 92 municipalities in the province, with special attention to those with fewer than 20.000 inhabitants. This ambitious project has a budget of 150.000 euros and aims to facilitate the first steps for municipalities to eliminate this material, whose presence poses a risk to health.

In the Marina Alta, a total of 27 towns will benefit from this initiative: Llosa de Camacho, Sagra, Castell de Castells, Tormos, Vall de Gallinera, Benimeli, Benigembla, Murla, L'Atzúbia, Senija, El Ràfol d 'Almúnia, La Vall de Laguar, Llíber, Parcent, Benidoleig, Alcalalí, Beniarbeig, Orba, Els Poblets, Xaló, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, El Verger, Gata de Gorgos, Ondara, Pedreguer, Pego and Teulada. The choice of these localities responds to their population size and, in some cases, their risk of depopulation.

Technical studies and proposals for asbestos removal

The Provincial Council technicians will be responsible for carrying out the studies, which will include:

  • A detailed map showing the location of the affected properties, distinguishing between public and private, residential and industrial buildings.
  • Data on the size, year of construction and dangerousness of buildings.
  • A proposed asbestos removal schedule based on technical and regulatory criteria, following UNE 171370-2 regulations to ensure the safety of the process.

The Environment Deputy, Magdalena Martínez, stressed the importance of this project: "Although the use of asbestos has been banned for more than twenty years, there is still much to be done to eliminate it from our buildings. This material, widely used in the past, represents a danger that must be addressed with specific and careful protocols."

More actions to benefit the energy transition

In parallel, the Provincial Council has allocated another 300.000 euros to subsidise the creation of local energy communities, promoting the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable mobility. In the Marina Alta, the municipalities selected for this aid are Castell de Castells, Benidoleig, Ondara, Llíber and Xaló.

These projects reinforce the Provincial Council's commitment to sustainability and energy savings, giving citizens a central role in the energy transition.

The Alicante Provincial Council continues to work to improve the quality of life in its municipalities, prioritising the needs of smaller towns, such as those in the Marina Alta, which now see increased resources to address environmental and energy challenges.
