The hermitage of Sant Miquel de Pego: location and characteristics

29 March 2021 - 10: 34

The hermitage of Sant Miquel is one of the two hermitages found in the center of Pego. Gives name to the street it is on. Originally it was in a rural environment but it was gradually swallowed up by the urban fabric. It is part of the typology of so-called “conquest” hermitages.

The first references to the hermitage of Sant Miquel in the municipal archive of Pego are from the late XNUMXth century. It was probably built at the same time as the hermitage of Sant Joan and that of Sant Antoni.

According to the municipal archivist of Pego, Joan Miquel Almela, there is evidence of a document in which an altarpiece is commissioned from Nicolau Borràs, a painter from Cocentaina disciple of Joan de Joanes, the Valencian Renaissance master. This altarpiece is not preserved. Much more recently, at the end of the XNUMXth century, the Sant Miquel hermitage received the donation of a canvas by the Pego Just Almela Company painter, a disciple of Sorolla.

In addition, from the documentation of the archive, numerous works are deduced throughout the history of the hermitage building, many of them to consolidate and avoid the ruin of the construction. One of the main characteristics is that the façade is reminiscent of the colonial constructions of the XNUMXth century.
