EME Teulada Moraira presents a motion for the abolition of the embolado bull in the town

16 October 2024 - 09: 30

The municipal group EME Teulada Moraira has presented a motion to debate the abolition of the practice of bullfighting in local festivities. The initiative, promoted by the spokesman Héctor Morales Puigcerver, is based on reasons of animal welfare and safety, arguing that this tradition "causes unnecessary suffering to animals and puts the safety of participants at risk."

In the document, Morales stresses that bullfighting, which consists of tying torches to the horns of bulls, "is a practice that has sparked growing controversy in society." He also points out that legislation on animal protection has evolved and that the abolition of this type of spectacle "would better align local customs with the values of respect and compassion towards animals."

The motion also emphasises that the elimination of the bullfighting would contribute to improving the image of Teulada Moraira as a municipality that promotes animal welfare. Furthermore, it is recalled that various surveys reflect a lack of consensus among the local population on the continuation of this practice.

Among the proposals presented, the City Council is urged to immediately ban the celebration of the bullfight and to promote cultural and festive alternatives "that do not involve animal suffering." It is also requested that the implementation of this measure be monitored to ensure its compliance.

The motion concludes by stating that the abolition of the bullfight would be "a step towards a more ethical and responsible society with regard to the environment and the living beings that inhabit it." The proposal is expected to be debated at a forthcoming municipal plenary session.
