Unemployment in the Marina Alta falls in August while it increases in the rest of the Valencian Community

14 September 2022 - 17: 04

Although minimally, the data collected by Creama through the Marina Alta Observatory suggest that registered unemployment in the region has fallen during the month of August. This drop in unemployment has reached the lowest level since July 2019. In year-on-year terms, the number of people unemployed at the SEPE has dropped by 22,75% and a revolution in hiring continues to be seen, with strong growth in indefinite.

The end of the summer season always causes a job loss in August and this month has been no exception. During this month there has been an increase in the number of unemployed both nationally and in the Valencian Community and the province of Alicante.

Thus, unemployment has risen by around 2% in the state and province of Alicante as a whole. However, this fact also has a positive reading, because, although the rise in unemployment in the global group must be regretted, the values reached are the lowest in recent years.

The strength of employment in the Marina Alta continues to show, although it is necessary to maintain social protection and support measures against the effects of the war in Ukraine, high inflation or the rise in interest rates.

Social Security Affiliations

The number of Social Security affiliates in August decreased by 1.454 people, reaching 62.270 affiliated people, which means a fall of 2,28% compared to July. This decrease breaks the monthly pattern of positive growth that was taking place practically throughout the year so far. Looking back a little further, we can certify that the months of August of the last 5 years have been characterized by job losses, in some cases more intense than in others, and in this month the loss of 1.454 affiliates tells us that we are better that in August 2021.

The year-on-year variation in employment stood at 5,43% in August. This translates into positive annual job growth. When we compare with the historical series, it is verified that it is a fairly high growth, which is equivalent to an increase in the number of affiliated people in the last year of 3.205 people.

By activity, the Agrarian Regime is the only sector that sees an increase in its members compared to the previous month, with 30,31% (+117 members). The General and Special Sea Regimes are the ones that have experienced the greatest drop compared to July, with -3,35% and -2,8%, respectively; they are followed by the General Regime SE Home with a slight decrease of -0,87%.

Year-on-year -compared with August 2021-, there is growth in enrollment in all Regimes except for the Agrarian Regime, which experienced a decrease of 2,14%. The General Regime grew by 6,75% and we highlight the 17,51% increase in the Special Regime for the Sea in the last year.

Jobseekers

Regarding the number of job seekers, it decreased in July by 7 people compared to July, despite achieving the second lowest number of job seekers in the historical series, after July 2019 (9.014 job seekers), this decrease it is very subtle. Thus, in this month of August, there was a fall in unemployment of 0,1%, values very similar to the Augusts preceding the health crisis, where the great tourist pull of the region prolongs the paralysis of the completion of contracts.

The composition of job seekers by sex is represented as has been usual in recent months, where the weight of unemployed men is 41,79% (3.795), compared to 58,21% of women (5.287). The decrease in job seekers in the last month has been only favorable for women, with a fall of 1,44% (-77 women), and that of men has increased by 1,88% (+70 men). If we compare with August 2021, there is a general fall, and this year-on-year decrease is more pronounced in the case of men (-27,58% in men compared to -18,87% in women). Thus, approximately, the rate of reduction is almost 9 percentage points higher in the case of men, contributing one more month to the fact that the difference by sex opens up somewhat more and that the proportion of unemployed men tends to fall notably more than that of women in the last year.

If we analyze unemployment by productive sectors, the Services sector concentrates the greatest decrease in absolute values of its number of job seekers (-67 people and 6.901 job seekers), this translates into -0,96%. Relatively, Agriculture leads in the decrease in its number of job seekers, with a decrease of -9,94% (-18 people and 163 job seekers). Construction and Industry, increase their number of job seekers. 6,85% (+30 people and 468 job seekers) for Construction, and 5,26% (+58 people and 1.161 job seekers) for Industry.

If we compare the number of job seekers for this month of August with August 2021, the year-on-year variation is still favorable, because they are reduced by 2.675 job seekers (-22,75%). Thus, the sectors of activity with the greatest percentage drop in unemployed people in the last year were Agriculture (-30,34% and 71 fewer people) and Construction (-27,26% and 435 fewer people). Services that, despite leading the increase in employment and its absolute fall in job seekers is the highest, (-1.765 people), its interannual percentage variation is -20,37%.

If we detail the analysis by section of economic activity and focus on those activities with the greatest weight in the region, we observe that the Hospitality industry decreases by 29 people (-1,62%). Commerce increases its number of unemployed people by 11 people (+0,75%). These variations become more dynamic if we compare it with the month of August of last year; Hospitality decreased its job seekers by -27,13%, Commerce -18,94%, Agriculture -30,34% and Construction -27,26%.

Unemployment rate

Through the calculation of the unemployment rate, in the Marina Alta, it is observed that it increases slightly compared to July, reaching an estimated unemployment rate of 12,73%.

Contracts

In terms of contracting, we find that in the month of August the contracting has decreased by 39,29% compared to July (-2.306 contracts) this decrease in contracting has occurred both in the temporary (-40,82%) as in the indefinite (-40,84%). The 3.563 contracts reached during this month, has been explained above all by permanent contracts, and it is that we must maintain optimism in terms of permanent contracts, which, despite decreasing by nearly 41% compared to July, remains at more than 63% of the total number of new hires, multiplying by more than 7 the average of a month of August prior to the labor reform that came into force last January. Therefore, 3.563 contracts have been signed, of which 33,37% are temporary and 63,51% indefinite. Permanent hiring has been in its sixth month of consistency (after the labor reform), despite the fact that the upward trend has been broken in the last two months, there is a clear preponderance over temporary hiring in the last six months. In this August, 2.263 permanent contracts were signed.

Therefore, despite the large weight of permanent contracts, there was a clear decrease compared to the previous month (-1.562 contracts and -40,84%) and temporary contracts also saw their hiring decrease by 40,82% (-820 contracts). The total number of contracts during this month of August is lower than that of the same month last year by -3,47% (-128 contracts), explained by temporary contracts (-64,08% and -2.121 contracts), but Indefinite hiring is reinforced, with year-on-year increases of 493,96% (+1.882 contracts). On the other hand, it should be noted that most of this new indefinite hiring in recent months are part-time contracts and it is this month again where most of the contracts are part-time. 60,65% of the contracts signed in this last month were part-time compared to 39,35% full-time.

Differences can be seen in the intensity of the variation in contracting by gender compared to the previous month, thus, contracting for women has decreased by 41,41% (-1.242 contracts) compared to July and for men there is a drop 37,07% (-1.064 contracts). The number of contracts signed during the month of August favors men somewhat more, 50,69% compared to 49,31% of women. Compared to August 2021, the decrease in hiring has been slightly more intense in the case of men (-3,73%, compared to -3,20% in women).

I do not understand how to explain that this is a disaster and getting worse, the columnist uses so much rhetoric, if not to mislead the reader.
The summary is that everything is a mess and getting worse and that part of the hiring is done by the institutions. Come on, A generalized DISASTER
