Next Tuesday, the Auditorium of the House of Culture will host a performance by the world-famous trio David Haroutunian (violin), Mikayel Hakhnazaryan (cello) and Sofya Melikyan (piano). The three musicians, who are Armenian and have known each other since childhood, are united by a great desire to explore and expand the chamber music repertoire together, as well as mutual respect and friendship. All three have established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians on the most select stages in Europe.
Strasbourg-based pianist Sofya Melikyan performs as a soloist with various European orchestras and has built up a loyal following for her virtuosity. The multi-talented violinist David Haroutunian's activities cover a wide spectrum, from classical music to traditional Armenian and Latin American music and contemporary music. He lives and works in Paris. Mikayel Hakhnazaryan, cellist of the renowned Kuss Quartett, is a chamber musician based in Berlin.
The three performers have appeared in the world's top concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, and the Berliner Philharmoniker alongside colleagues such as Mischa Maisky, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Kim Kashkashian, Paul Meyer, David Geringas, and Paul Badura-Skoda, among others.
Her recording of Johannes Brahms' Trios No. 2 and 3 - released in 2021 - was the first in a series that will record all of her chamber works. The album received critical acclaim in France, Germany, Spain and other European countries. It was presented on France Musique as a "Disque du jour". The second disc of this project - with Brahms' Trio No. 1 and Schoenberg's Transfigured Night - was recorded in June 2023 and was released in November 2024, already receiving top marks from the specialist press, such as 5 notes from the prestigious music website Pizzicato.
The specialized critics have not skimped on praise for this trio that arrives at Calp Auditorium next Tuesday at 19:00 pm in a free concert organized by the Department of Culture. With this type of activity, the Department aims to combine events of international significance with performances by local entities in its cultural offering.
