After the announcement of Municipality of Teulada Moraira Regarding the start of the works on the project to install underground containers in the town, the local party Compromís has criticised that the completed execution will take a year and a half longer than expected. In addition, the Valencianists have assured that the plan has suffered a considerable reduction in terms of the number of container islands initially planned.
According to Compromís, the project to bury the containers is part of the Alicante Provincial Council's Planifica 2020/2023 Plan, which began in March 2020. This plan included three projects selected during the previous government's term, which included the participation of Compromís, PSOE and two non-attached councillors. Among the selected projects was the renovation of the 21 islands of underground containers in Teulada i Moraira, with a budget of more than 600.000 euros.
The administration of the process, which was in the hands of the Alicante Provincial Council, experienced considerable delays. Although the drafting of the project was finalised in December 2022, it was not until May 2023, "just before the elections", they point out, when the current government approved the renewal of the containers. As a result of the delays, the initial cost of the project increased and it was decided to reduce the number of islands to be renovated from 21 to 11.
In February 2024, the Provincial Council finally awarded the contract for the works, with a total budget of 614.461,75 euros. However, the City Council announced yesterday that only six of the 11 islands initially planned will be renovated, all in the urban centre of Moraira.
Compromís Teulada i Moraira strongly criticises this decision and questions the management of the project. According to the group, "the 'primary' intervention will hopefully be completed a year and a half late" and they regret that the current government "is taking credit for a project that they did not start and that is late and a third of what was requested."
