Compromís per Pego presents objections against an "unfair and inflated" increase in the garbage tax

At the plenary session in November, Pego City Council approved a 36% increase (€171 per dwelling) in the waste collection fee, with the support of the PSOE and the abstention of the PP, which ensured the approval of the proposal. Compromís per Pego voted against the modification of the ordinance.

Now, the Valencianists have presented objections against the final approval of the ordinance, which is currently in the public exhibition period. "Using the excuse of complying with the waste law, the socialists and the popular party are imposing an unfair increase in the tax, which contradicts the principle of that same law: the polluter pays. Now we will all pay more. No system of bonuses or payment per generation has been established that would allow rewarding those families that comply with the obligation to properly separate domestic waste," says Víctor Climent, spokesman for the municipal group of Compromís.

In its allegations, Compromís per Pego also claims that the governing team (PSOE), in calculating the cost of the service, "has inflated the figures to justify such an exaggerated increase of 36%. Costs are included that do not correspond to the rubbish collection service, such as the cost of street cleaning or the entire salary of the environmental technician (who has many more responsibilities in addition to waste management). Likewise, the income received by the City Council for the fractions of cardboard and packaging that are collected is omitted."

The concession for the rubbish collection service with the City Council has been expired for a year, pending a new tender, according to the political group. "We are asking that this proposal be withdrawn and that no modification of the rate be approved until there is a new contract with a waste collection system based on payment per generation," explains Climent.

The Valencians are betting on a door-to-door selective collection system because "it has been proven that it is the system that allows for greater separation of waste, offering an excellent service to citizens, who have their rubbish collected from their doorstep. In addition, we would have cleaner streets, without containers that generate bad odours and, often, become dumping grounds for all kinds of waste," they declare.

Finally, Climent wanted to clarify that "towns in our area that have opted for this system, such as Pedreguer or Orba, will pay a lower waste tax in 2025 than Pego."
