In yesterday's plenary session, the Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy of the Pego City Council was approved. The Plan consists of an evaluation of the climatic conditions that will affect the different sectors of the municipality and an action plan to mitigate climate change and adapt to its consequences. The document, prepared by the Diputación de Alicante, was available for consultation in order to review it before being approved in plenary.
The municipal group Compromís Pego showed its rejection of this Plan due to its lack of ambition in the face of the climate emergency. "The Plan is very unambitious and full of errors, we cannot give our approval to such an irresponsible attitude on the part of the government team in a matter as serious as climate change" explained spokeswoman Anna Sastre.
In their presentation during the plenary session, the Valencianists detailed a whole series of shortcomings and errors that the document presented. From Compromís pointing out that, "for example, climatic data had been taken from the Elche airport weather station, there was no budget in some items, the actions to be carried out were not detailed, indicators that have nothing to do with the measurement of results persecuted, references to the municipality of El Pego (Zamora), etc...".
The spokeswoman for the municipal group wanted to highlight one of the actions proposed in the Plan, "the permeabilization of the soil through the reduction of the urbanized area. How does this action make this action compatible with the growth of urban land and the new developments that it intends to carry out?" What is this government team carrying out?” asked Compromís councillor, Ángel Oltra, in relation to the Pego Golf project.
“This government team (PSOE + CdPi) has shown that the fight against climate change is not its priority. In addition, it approved this Plan thanks to the approval of the group on the right (Cs+PP). Therefore, we regret to say that Compromís Pego is the only political force in the municipality that takes the welfare and prosperity of future generations seriously. Pego needs a more courageous and serious Climate Action Plan” argued spokeswoman Anna Sastre. "The pegolinos and pegolinas are already suffering the consequences of climate change on their skin, this municipality needs representatives who are sensitive to this suffering and brave in the measures to be taken," she concludes.
