How the DANA will affect the Marina Alta in the next few hours: special notice and active alerts

November 12 from 2024 - 09: 20

After a weekend of pleasant stability in the skies of the Marina Alta, the region is preparing to receive a new episode of precipitation in the next few hours. According to the information note of the State Meteorological Agency, a mass of cold air is moving from northern Europe to the southwest, reaching the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands as of today, Tuesday.

The forecast indicates that it is likely to end up isolating itself as a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) or cold storm in the Mediterranean and the south of the peninsula from Wednesday, November 13 and remaining until Saturday, November 16. One of the points with the highest probability of intense and persistent precipitation is the northern coast of Alicante.

Active warnings in the Marina Alta

For this reason, the AEMET has activated the yellow warning for precipitation in the Marina Alta (northern coast of Alicante) for today, Tuesday, November 12, from 12:00 noon to 20:59 hours at night. The accumulated precipitation in one hour on Tuesday could reach 20 mm. The yellow level will also be active for coastal phenomena Tuesday from 20:00 p.m. to Wednesday at 14:59 a.m., with northeast winds of 50 to 60 km/h (force 7) and waves of 3 to 4 meters.

However, the warning is raised to orange from today, Tuesday, at 21:00 p.m. and throughout Wednesday 13 to midnight. With the orange warning, rain could be accompanied by thunderstorms and leave records of 40 mm in one hour or 120 mm in twelve hours.

How the AEMET warning system works and what the different levels mean

The Agency points out that "the wind will shift from northeast to east (levante) on Wednesday", so the second half of Wednesday and early Thursday morning will be "the period of greatest adversity on the northern coast of Valencia, the area most affected by the floods caused by the storm on October 29."

The AEMET has also extended to Thursday November 14 warnings. On this day, the risk level is yellow from 00:00 to 11:59.

It should be noted, as experts point out, that a DANA is not always synonymous with torrential rain. The AEMET explains: "We must always look at low layers, how the wind flow is organized, the jets in low layers, the advections of warm and humid air, etc. On this occasion, a priori, there is much less energy at stake than on October 29."

Special notice from the Generalitat Emergency Coordination Centre and alerts

The Generalitat's Emergency Coordination Centre (CEE) issued a special warning yesterday, stressing that the DANA "will deepen in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, remaining at least until Saturday 16." It points out that the "uncertainty" increases from Thursday and warns that "as a consequence, the Reactivation of river and ravine basins and local flooding due to the accumulations in areas of high urban occupation, with special impact in areas already affected by the DANA of October 29."

The Marina Alta is once again on orange alert declared by Emergencies

The special notice urges municipalities and organizations "with jurisdiction in emergency management" to maintain the necessary attention and follow-up of all CEE notices. For this reason, the CEE activated yesterday the Orange alert on the southern coast of Valencia and on the northern coast of Alicante.

Forecast from the Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante

An organization close to the Marina Alta that also helps to provide information in these cases is the Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante (UA). The entity announces that the cold drop or DANA will cross the Iberian Peninsula from northeast to southwest during Wednesday, although Its effects will begin to be noticed as early as this Tuesday in the regions of the Valencian Community.

According to their statement, "this Tuesday there will be some showers in the second part of the day, which will be locally intense in the northern end of Marina Baixa, Marina Alta and in the Comtat. They may occur in a more dispersed manner in other areas of the coast.

On Wednesday, the DANA will intensify, with rainfall spreading across the Alicante region. Generally light or moderate rainfall is expected, although They could be intense at times and accompanied by storms. The most affected areas will once again be the northern end of Marina Baixa, Marina Alta and Comtat. "In these areas, the accumulated rainfall could locally exceed 150-200 l/m² throughout the week," he points out.

The precipitation will begin to recede in the central and southern regions, although the possibility of some scattered thundery showers is not ruled out. From there, The DANA will evolve into an isolated cold storm, keeping the rains in the south of the Gulf of Valencia due to the persistence of the gregal winds, with a possible return of the precipitations on Friday in other areas. The temperatures, which will experience a decrease at the beginning of the week, will tend to rise towards the end of the same. The easterly and gregal winds will cause strong waves on the coasts.

The climatological laboratory warns that, although this DANA will not bring with it rains as intense as those recently recorded in Valencia, where the rainfall was "catastrophic and exceptional", some flooding could occur, especially in the Balearic Islands, Andalusia and some areas of the province of Valencia, although "not at all on the scale of those of a few days ago".

Extreme caution is recommended in areas near ravines and gullies due to the risk of flooding.
