Benitatxell collects a third of European funds for municipalities with less than 5.000 inhabitants in the province

03 July 2024 - 16: 39

More than half of the municipality's annual budget, more than 1.000 euros per inhabitant or, in absolute terms, more than 4,8 million. It is the amount that the government team of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell has managed to obtain in European funds since the European Union launched the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan in 2021.

The town is thus placed, according to data published by the Institute of Economic Studies of the Province of Alicante (INECA), the first in the ranking of municipalities with less than 5.000 inhabitants in the province of Alicante. Its 4.860.528,09 euros represent 30% of the total of the 16,3 million distributed among the 23 towns in this category.

"The fact that a small municipality with an annual budget of 8 million has managed to obtain this amount in less than three years reflects the great technical effort, both internal and external, that has been made," said the mayor, Miguel Ángel García. This effort, according to García, has led Benitatxell to place itself ahead of neighbouring towns with much more population and resources such as Xàbia (€367.478 in European funds), Calp (€2.290.791), Teulada (€2.100.737) or Benissa (€2.957.532).

This sum of European funds has been distributed into five plans: access control at Moraig Creek (€252.685) and the replacement of conventional streetlights with others with LED technology (€501.465), already executed; the Tourism Sustainability Plan (€2.441.513), currently being implemented; the rehabilitation of the Municipal Market (€700.346), for which the tender has been void and the process will be carried out again, and the future semi-pedestrianization of Mayor and Mercat streets and adaptation of a park-and-ride on the Xàbia road next to the cemetery ( €785.921).
