The plenary session of the City Council approved yesterday to waive the execution of the works of the walkway and breakwaters project of the La Manzanera Social Club but the modification of the rehabilitation of the Social Club will be executed so that the works are carried out dry, without any intervention in the sea and request the Ministry of Ecological Transition the concession for this space to have a cultural, scientific and educational use.
The point had the favorable votes of the groups PP, Ciudadanos and Compromís, the abstention of the PSPV-PSOE and the votes against Defendamos Calpe.
The existence in the area of a vermetid colony was discovered only present in 3 sites in the area
At the beginning of the year, the City Council pre-awarded the Orthem mercantile the rehabilitation of this building designed by the sea by Ricardo Bofill in the 70s. The City Council intended to recover this emblematic area with an action that included, on the one hand, the rehabilitation of the old social club of La Manzanera, where a restaurant would be included, and, on the other, the regeneration of the coastline that runs between these facilities and La Manzanera cove with a pedestrian walkway.
In March of this year, given that the award was subject to a report of habitat affectation due to the inclusion of the area in the Natura 2000 Network, se discovered the existence in the area of a colony of vermetids. This is an exceptional mollusk that can only be found in our province in the Cova Tallada in Xàbia, in Tabarca and in La Manzanera de Calp and that lives in unique conditions between the surface and the water.
This species could be affected by the works of the Social Club breakwater, for this reason it has been decided to modify the project and renounce the execution of the walkway and breakwater project by modifying the Social Club rehabilitation project with the reduction of the area in the that it would be intervened, so that the works are carried out dry from land, without acting at sea.
The rehabilitation project of the La Manzanera Social Club has a budget of € 585.525 in the municipal budget. As for the La Manzanera coastal walkway project, it had a budget of € 680.750.
The spokesperson for Defendamos Calpe, Paco Quiles, pointed out that "This investment is not a priority and should not be made, any euro from the City Council must be invested effectively. It also turns out that now there is an extra cost and we spend the same even if we give up the catwalk ”.
The spokesperson for Compromís per Calp, Ximo Perles, highlighted that “We agree with the government's proposal because we were concerned about the intended use of this project, we wanted it to be a use that would benefit all citizens and with the new use that will be possible. As the Social Club is right now and with the danger that it entails, there are three solutions: keep it in ruins, tear it down or restore it. Although there are other priorities and needs, we are going to vote in favor of the project ”.
The mayor of the PSPV-PSOE, Marco Bittner, intervened to point out that “although the social club is an architectural landmark, the truth is that it has been abandoned for longer than it is in use, the City Council's whim to rehabilitate it is not part of an organized plan. In 2015, the Conselleria already pointed out the need for environmental reports and even so they put out to tender a project without knowing if it can be executed and on top of that the work will cost the same although it is reduced by half, this is an economic and administrative nonsense ”.
The spokesperson for Ciudadanos Calpe and mayor of Territory, Juan Manuel del Pino, intervened to emphasize that "this space is of very important cultural value, the cost has become more expensive because it is not the same to work from the cove, which is what the walkway would have allowed, as from above the cliff, the breakwater is not made out to sea but on dry land ”.
Finally the mayor, Ana Sala, intervened to point out that "The prices of the works have been valued by the technicians not by us, some have insisted that this project does not go ahead but our objective is to value our heritage ”.
What is the Manzanera Social Club
The Manzanera Social Club is a recreational facility built in the 70s next to the sea that housed a restaurant, a swimming pool area and a small jetty, it is a unique space since it is located within the public land domain. Its position exposed to marine action and long years of neglect have brought the facility to a state of serious disrepair.
Thus, the objective now is to recover the area while respecting its original design and structure, its characteristic circular windows and its initial materials. Regarding the use of these facilities, the concession has been requested from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, for the occupation of 1062 m². of maritime-terrestrial public domain destined for free cultural, scientific and educational public use.

Es zog ein schweres Gewitter auf, die Wellen peitschten bald gegen die Bullaugen-Fenster. Durch den offenen Zugang zum Steg knallte hin und wieder das Wasser bis ins Restaurant. Wir rochen das Meer, wir hörten das Meer, wir sahen das Meer, wir fühlten das Meer and wir schmeckten das Meer. Eines der schönsten Erlebnisse, die ich je hatte. Das schönste Meer-Erlebnis ever !
