The first full week of January has been marked by unusually high temperatures for the time of year in the Marina Alta. Temperatures have exceeded 20 °C on numerous occasions, leaving the weather more like spring than winter in the municipalities. This trend will change in the next few hours.
Starting today, Sunday 12 January, temperatures will start to drop. The State Meteorological Agency has warned that "from Sunday onwards a mass of cold air will arrive, with a sharp drop in temperature. There will be widespread frost, even near the coast."
Maximum temperatures will drop by between five and six degrees, reaching 16 °C in most of the region. They could drop to 14 °C in inland towns. But the most notable drop between one day and the next of the weekend will be in minimum temperatures, which will go from 15 degrees on Saturday to below 9 °C on Sunday.

The cool trend will continue during the next week, and "by midweek there could be rain in the Mediterranean area and snow in the eastern mountains, although it could also occur at lower altitudes," says AEMET. Between Monday and Friday, maximum temperatures will range between 14 and 16 °C, while minimum temperatures will drop to 7 °C in a large part of the region, and even to 4 °C in the towns located further inland.
At the moment, AEMET does not expect rain in the Marina Alta until at least the afternoon of Thursday 16 January. On the other hand, a yellow warning has been activated for coastal phenomena on the northern coast of Alicante on Tuesday 14 from 12:00 to 19:59. The warning warns of waves of up to 3 metres and "northeast winds of 45 to 55 km/h (force 6 to 7)".
