Which towns in the Marina Alta benefit from the free transport of the Generalitat?

08 October 2022 - 08: 25

As of tomorrow, Sunday, October 9, public transport that is the responsibility of the Generalitat Valenciana will be free for people under 30 years of age. This is how the measure was announced last August "to promote sustainable mobility, reduce the costs of citizens and combat the effects of inflation", in the words of the president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig.

However, as specified, those transports that depend on the Generalitat are only four: Metrovalencia, TRAM d'Alacant, TRAM Castelló and MetroBus. Specifically, the Marina Alta is only affected by one of them and it is a means that reaches, more or less, to the southern half of the region.

Municipalities directly benefited

Taking into account that the public service ends in Dénia, the people who will benefit the most from the free service will be those residents in the following locations:

  • Calp
  • Benissa
  • Teulada-Moraira
  • Gata de Gorgos
  • The Xara
  • Dénia

The renovation works of the L9 of the Alicante train that ends in the Marina Alta, for the moment, continue to leave the last section of the route, from Gata de Gorgos to the Dianense capital, in the hands of the bus.

How to request accreditation to travel for free?

Last Thursday, the Generalitat enabled an online option on the TRAM d'Alacant website to obtain the accreditation that allows young people to travel for free. However, the start of the application period collapsed the telematic service in hours after receiving more than 2.000.000 applications.

For this reason, as of October 11, another website will be set up that will centralize the demands and will be accessible from the TRAM d'Alacant page. The operation will be simple: access the web and get an appointment to, at a certain time and on a certain day, request an appointment to pick up your card at the selected station.

The steps to follow to obtain the prior appointment to pick up the card are:

  • Access the website through the TRAM d'Alacant.
  • Enter the applicant's ID number.
  • Choose a place to pick up the card among all the available options.

Access to the procedure is done through an email to which a confirmation message will be sent with the number of the appointment to collect the accreditation. At the collection it will be necessary to present said message and the corresponding DNI.

On the other hand, only an identity document can be associated by email provided and accreditation cannot be obtained without an appointment. In addition, a single person can collect several cards as long as they provide the necessary codes and the original DNI.

Until when will the public service be available without paying?

Free transport for those under 30 will be in force from October 9 to January 15, 2023. After the barrage of demands, the Generalitat has decided to extend, for the time being, the Free Youth Temporary Pass 15 days more than initially planned , which was until December 31.

Other measures to make public transport cheaper

In addition to this, the Generalitat Valenciana, through the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, has carried out other measures to facilitate transport in the territory and that directly affect the Marina Alta.

On the one hand, the simplification of the Alicante TRAM zone plan, which has allowed prices to be reduced by 50% and, on the other hand, the additional 30% discount that began to be implemented on September 1st until December 31st and which benefits all users in general.

Municipalities can join the initiative

Last Wednesday, Ximo Puig announced that the Gnerealitat will finance 50% of free urban transport for young people to those municipalities that want to join the measure. The first reactions have not been long in coming.

For his part, Vicent Grimalt, mayor of Dénia, announced yesterday that the capital of the region would join the proposal on the Marines-Les Rotes buses and on the one that goes to the Dénia Hospital. In this way, the City Council will bear half the cost and the Generalitat will contribute the rest.

En Xàbia.com, we could read on Friday that the Cs spokesperson in the City Council, Enrique Escrivá, asked the municipal government to initiate the procedures to implement the initiativelike Denia.
